The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine (DPLM) at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) and the Department of Pathology at The Ohio State University College of Medicine seek a hematopathologist with a minimum of 4 years-experience. The successful candidate will be appointed as Assistant or Associate Director of the Hematopathology Laboratory, commensurate with qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director to assume increasing responsibility for this leadership role and will have a unique opportunity for involvement in major Children’s Oncology Group (COG) related studies and responsibility for supporting collaborative research project.

The position will share clinical services with 4 other faculty members in the areas of general and special hematology, flow cytometry, hemostasis, and surgical hematopathology.

There are approximately 30 pathologists and doctoral scientists working with experienced staff in the DPLM at NCH. Building upon an already premier program, the candidate has the opportunity to grow the academic mission of the department by providing excellent clinical care, education and/or research. Faculty are fully supported to pursue a concentrated experience at other institutions in developing their subspecialty where applicable.

The position will provide assistance to the Department’s pathology laboratory, active learning curriculum for residents, graduate students, pathology fellows, and consultative services and Outreach Program. Qualifications include board certification in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and board certification in Hematopathology; board certification or specific training in Pediatric Pathology is an asset, but not a requirement.

The Department of Pathology performs over 300 bone marrow specimens, over 250 flow cytometry samples, over 1700 hemoglobin electrophoreses, accessions 9,000 surgical specimens including 100 lymph nodes, over 1,200 cytology specimens and over 90 autopsies annually. The clinical laboratories have a volume of >3 million tests per year and the Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM) clinical laboratory processes 7,000 specimens a year. The menu of IGM continues to expand to support the DPLM as well as outside facilities across North America.

An active, ACGME accredited fellowship program in pediatric pathology is an integral part of the NCH Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Furthermore, as part of our commitment to faculty development and academic advancement, we have instituted a robust mentorship program with mentors at NCH and other respected institutions.

The NCH Diagnostic Immunology Lab/Program was recently initiated. This included an inauguration of the Jeffrey Modell Foundation for Primary Immunodeficiencies Diagnostic and Research Center at NCH.

The Department is also in the midst of a 5 year multimillion dollar construction project. An intra-operative consultation suite and multi-headed scope room have already been constructed.

The Abigail Wexner Research Institute at NCH and the NCH Department of Pathology is home to one of the world’s largest pediatric biobanks and is the site of the COG, Southwest Oncology Group (SWOG) and the Gynecologic Oncology Group biobanks. The Biopathology Core Resource of The Cancer Genome Atlas is also located in the Research Institute.
