Summary

The Dayton VAMC is currently seeking a Physician, Radiation Oncologist. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining and improving systems of delivering health care by participating in programs and following policies, improving utilization of resources, suggesting needed process changes for the clinical programs in the Radiation Oncology section within the Therapeutic and Diagnostic Radiology Service. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be paid to a highly qualified candidate.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine.
  • The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), (2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), or (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
  • Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
  • PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis.
  • PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
  • Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Additional Requirement: SBRT experience within the past two years required.
  • Minimum experience of 20 cases per year for the past two years required.
  • Physical Requirements: Physicians should be physically and mentally capable of performing examinations, formulating diagnosis and treatment plans, and educating residents.
  • Physical activity includes sitting, standing (for up to 4 hours), walking, moderate lifting (intermittently, 10 lbs.), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending.
  • Physician should be emotionally and mentally stable and capable of performing the duties of the position.

Duties

  • This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT.
  • Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis and qualified candidates will be considered as vacancies become available.
  • Applications will remain on file until September 30, 2025.
  • Major duties include, but are not limited to: Provides clinical instructions for physics, dosimetry, radiation therapists and other clinical staff as assigned.
  • Responsible for providing all services in an efficient, high-quality, cost-effective manner within budget allocation.
  • Works with the Chief, Radiation Oncology and Chief, Therapeutic and Diagnostic Imaging Service and other staff as appropriate, supports operations issues/problems resolution in a logical, step wise fashion.
  • Participates in a forum in which staff identifies, communicates, and resolves issues related to Radiation Oncology Section, Medical Center ancillary and support operations, and VISN-wide mandates.
  • Responsible for implementing the goal of improving care for patients within the Medical Center and VISN.
  • Has basic understanding of managed care practices, including health care finance, billing, coding and documentation.
  • Knowledge, ability and willingness to use and promote the dissemination among clinical staff of current automated technology for Health Information Management Sections (HIMS), patient data tracking, patient orders, etc.
  • Participates in local administrative, management, quality assurance, and other assignments, meetings, or committees.
  • Provides direct patient care as a consultant in outpatient clinics and/or inpatient wards and will participate in the Radiation Oncology Section on call schedule.
  • Participates in regular peer review activities.
  • Maintains patient records and files.
  • Follows HIPPA guidelines regarding patient information.
  • Ensures timely completion of daily clinic notes with accurate documentation and coding of services rendered.
  • Practices radiation safety to reduce exposure to patients, staff, and self, in compliance with department and VA radiation safety procedures to maintain occupational exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
  • Provides patients with accurate and compassionate treatment.
  • Follows established safety practices and reports as promptly as possible to unsafe conditions, unsafe practices or any occupational illness or injury sustained.
  • Adheres to all safety and health standards regulations, work practices and uses proper protective equipment as required.
  • Participates in quality assurance (QA) activities to include and provide data collection, data analysis, and trends and reports on changes based on data collection.
  • Other duties as assigned.
