JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the professional nurse, performs a variety of clerical duties associated with patient care unit operations and also provides direct care duties within the scope of a CNA or EMT-B, as applicable.

- Complies with organizational and regulatory policies for handling confidential patient information.
- Demonstrates excellent customer service through his/her attitude and actions, consistent with the standards contained in the Vision, Mission, and Values of the organization.
- Adheres to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and DNV standards and/or standards from other accrediting bodies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provide direct patient care under the scope of a CNA or EMT-B certification if applicable, as directed by nursing staff when needed.
- Use of computer for patient data entry.
- Communicates with members of the health care team, patients, and visitors using oral and written means and equipment such as the telephone and intercom.
- Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
- Labels, assembles, completes, and processes patients' charts as indicated.
- Keeps patient records accurately identified.
- Maintains an accurate clinical record, recording information per hospital policy.
- Checks charts and removes nonpermanent reports when permanent reports are obtained.
- Prepares special forms such as body-release permits. Obtains charts from Medical Records as needed.
- Assists with receiving, distributing, and sorting supplies brought to the unit. Prepares requisitions and reports for maintenance repairs.
- Responsible for obtaining lab and X-ray reports and notifying team nurse of results.
- Maintains an orderly and businesslike environment at the nursing station in order to assist members of the health care team in the performance of their jobs despite high-stress factors.
- Timely and accurate completion of all delegated patient care procedures and treatments.
- Answers call lights promptly.
- Collects specimens: urine, stool, sputum, etc., and documents collection in the medical record.
- Assists in maintaining order and cleanliness within the unit.
- Performs post-mortem care.
- Sets up nasal/mask oxygen appropriately and reapplies as assigned.
- Timely and safe transport of patients to and from the department via ambulation, wheelchair, and stretchers.
- Provides for patient's personal hygiene: gives bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos, and shaves, and assists with showers as applicable.
- Provides for activities of daily living: assists with meals and feeds patients; ambulates, turns, and positions patients; provides fresh water and nourishment between meals, as applicable.
- Administers enemas, douches, non-sterile dressings, surgical preps, ice packs, heat treatments, sitz and therapeutic baths, and applies restraints.
- Performs I checks vital signs and weight; specimen collection, and post-mortem care.
- Professionally communicates pertinent and timely information to care team members.
- Accepts all other duties and responsibilities as appropriate to skill level and as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Active CNA or EMT-B is required
- CPR - approved by the American Heart Association.
- One-year medical office or clerical experience preferred.
- Excellent typing and personal computer skills.
- Good oral and written communication.
- Excellent organization skills.
FUNCTIONAL DEMANDS
Working Conditions and Physical Environment
- Works in a patient care setting where there is potential exposure to blood, body fluids, infectious materials; and electrical, fire, chemical, physical contact and equipment hazards.
- Fast-paced setting with rapid patient turnover.
- High patient traffic.
- Close-quartered and shared work space.
- Sufficient mobility to negotiate physical plant.
- Strength and endurance sufficient enough to perform physically for long periods of time without sitting (four to eight hours). May include: walking; lifting 25 – 50lbs with or without assistance; bending; twisting; standing; sitting; reaching; stair-climbing and descending.
- Physical dexterity and psychomotor skills to respond adequately and appropriately to routine and emergency patient care needs in an ambulatory setting.
- Visual and auditory capabilities sufficient to read information and respond to patient care needs.
- Ability to work in a computerized environment that includes prolonged sitting and use of keyboard, mouse, and monitor.
- Cognitive ability to accurately observe, analyze, and interpret general and technical data both verbal and written to accurately communicate this information.
