POSITION SUMMARY Wayne Center for the Arts (WCA) seeks a visionary maker, educator, and administrator to launch and lead a new Fabrication Lab (FabLab) program focused on 3D design, glass art, metalwork, and woodworking. The FabLab Coordinator will be responsible for building this department from the ground up—including curriculum development, phased equipment acquisition, artist-in-residence recruitment, instructional delivery, safety oversight, and community engagement. In addition to teaching, this position plays a key leadership role in developing a strong teaching artist team. The FabLab Coordinator will be responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and managing instructors and artists-in-residence, including negotiating and completing contracts and overseeing instructional quality. This is an exciting opportunity to shape a forward-thinking, interdisciplinary program that merges traditional craftsmanship with modern fabrication technologies. The Coordinator will guide implementation of a progressive curriculum in glass, metal, and wood arts while ensuring studio safety, equipment maintenance, and educational excellence. The position also includes the launch and supervision of a formal Artist-in-Residence (AIR) program, contributing to the vibrancy and reach of WCA’s educational offerings.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS ● Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in education, industrial design, studio arts, or related fields ● Hands-on experience with manual fabrication tools including soldering and welding equipment, woodworking machinery, and/or kilns ● Demonstrated experience developing curriculum and teaching across levels (youth, adult, beginner through advanced) ● Knowledge of safety requirements and best practices in woodshops, glass studios, and metalworking spaces ● Experience mentoring other teaching artists and working collaboratively in an educational or nonprofit arts environment ● Experience managing budgets, supplies, and/or studio operations ● People skills to develop and maintain community partnerships, including communications with funders
JOB DUTIES Program Development & Implementation (40%) ● Develop and pilot a core course sequence, from introductory to advanced levels, in glass, metal, and wood ● Lead phased equipment procurement in line with curriculum needs and safety standards ● Launch and manage a formal Artist-in-Residence program that attracts professional artists in glass, metal, and wood to teach, create, and exhibit at WCA ● Recruit and contract skilled teaching artists and visiting faculty in collaboration with the Executive Director ● Collaborate with Executive Director on long-term program strategy, budget planning, and community outreach ● Coordinate with other department heads on cross-curricular offerings and special projects Instruction & Mentorship (30%) ● Teach classes and workshops in one or more areas of specialization ● Monitor open studio hours, and provide technical support to students, interns, studio assistants, and guest artists ● Oversee performance and instructional quality of teaching artists and Artists-in-Residence, providing feedback, professional development opportunities, and supportive supervision ● Foster a culture of safety, creativity, and excellence in all FabLab activities Studio & Equipment Oversight (20%) ● Oversee installation, operation, and maintenance of tools, machinery, and safety systems ● Develop and enforce safety procedures, training, and access protocols for all studio users ● Manage studio schedules, monitor usage, and ensure readiness for classes and residencies ● Maintain inventory and oversee timely ordering of supplies and equipment Administration, Promotion & Evaluation (10%) ● Develop and manage the FabLab departmental budget in collaboration with Executive Director ● Collect and report data for grants, evaluations, and continuous improvement ● Submit catalog content and course descriptions per internal deadlines ● Provide content to Marketing for promoting classes, residencies, and exhibitions ● Represent the FabLab and WCA at community events, open houses, and professional gatherings
COMPENSATION Salary $44,000 - $50,000 commensurate with experience, and health and vision insurance. A 3% IRA match is offered following one year of employment.
