Job Title:Physician - Internal Medicine Dept, Palliative Care, Palliative Medicine Physician (Open Rank/Track Faculty)

The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center are excited to announce opportunities for Palliative Medicine Physicians to join our expanding team within the Division of Palliative Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine . Academic rank and track are commensurate with academic record and experience.

Position Overview

The selected physician(s) will collaborate with a robust interdisciplinary team to provide compassionate, high-quality palliative care to adult patients with serious illness. Responsibilities will include inpatient consultation and/or ambulatory care, and clinical teaching to fellows, residents, and medical students.

Practice settings include palliative cardiac, cancer, and transplant ambulatory clinics as well as inpatient consultation in our main campus hospitals (The James Cancer Hospital, The Ross Heart Hospital, University Hospital, The Brain and Spine Hospital, Dodd Hall Rehabilitation Hospital, Harding Hospital) and in a community-based hospital (Ohio State East Hospital)

Faculty will have ample opportunity to pursue careers in medical education, quality improvement, patient advocacy, and clinical research with collaborations across the Wexner Medical Center and The Ohio State University.

Our vision: Lead the way for person-centered care with each patient through clinical, educational, and research innovation.

The Palliative Medicine team cares for seriously ill patients throughout their illness trajectory. Our areas of expertise include palliative care in cancer, heart failure, advanced lung disease, transplant, intensive care, neurologic conditions, geriatrics, and advanced liver disease.

We educate trainees and practicing clinicians on primary palliative care principles from multiple disciplines and subspecialities. Our program has five ACGME-accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine fellowship positions including Adult, combined Adult/Pediatric, and combined Oncology/Palliative Medicine track.

Our research initiatives center on palliative care delivery, symptom management, and implementation science in the areas of cancer, organ transplant, and substance use disorder. Supported through both internal and extramural funding, our research endeavors include topics such as models of palliative care delivery, cancer symptom management in substance use disorder, digital health interventions for symptom monitoring and management, and cognitive assessment for older adults with cancer.

Requirements

  • Board Certified in one of the ten general specialties leading to Hospice and Palliative Medicine Certification
  • BC/BE for ABMS Certification in Hospice and Palliative Medicine
  • Ohio Medical License or able to meet the requirements
  • DEA License
  • Highly skilled in Palliative Medicine symptom management techniques and serious illness communication skills
  • Experience and/or interest in the clinical practice of palliative care for high acuity patients in a quaternary referral academic medical center
  • Experience and/or interest in palliative care education for trainees, staff, and faculty
  • Experience and/or interest in palliative care research is highly desirable
  • Experience and/or interest in engagement at the institution, local, regional, and national level to advance the field of Palliative Medicine is highly desirable

Faculty Defined

Clinical faculty (regardless of rank)
- Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a doctor of medicine (MD), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research.

Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.

Research Faculty (regardless of rank) - Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.
