Adult Felony Probation Officer
JOB CHARACTERISTICS:
Under the general county employee under supervision of the Chief Probation Officer, supervising adult placed on intensive supervision by the Allen County Court of Common Pleas or Lima Municipal Court. Works with community agencies to refer and monitor progress/attendance of the adult be it in Chemical Dependency, Mental Health, Academic, etc. Also responsible for monitoring in the home, community as well as compliant with court ordered conditions of supervision. This is a classified service position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position will provide (40) hours of service per week to the Probation Department
Provides contact with the offender to the frequency of one (1) time to five (5) times per week. Method of supervision will consist of face-to-face contact in the office or home, verification of employment, phone contacts and random urine screens for alcohol/illegal drugs.
Supervision will include monitoring of offenders placed on probation with the Probation Department, initiate/observe drug screens, conduct interviews, make referrals to appropriate agencies within the community and maintain complete and accurate records of assigned adults that are placed on probation.
The selected candidate will also be responsible for explaining the rules of probation, counsels' probationers on methods or actions necessary to comply with conditions of probation, informs probationers of possible consequences of non-compliance, resolves problems that arise between probationers, society, and other related parties.
QUALIFICATIONS:
An appropriate combination of education, training, course work and experience may quality an applicant to demonstrate required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of an acceptable qualification is: Must possess a valid operator’s license, be able to pass a urine screen as well as a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in social services or a related area; or a two (2) year associates degree in a related area plus five (5) years or related experience with evidences and advanced knowledge of the Criminal Justice System.
While working probation officers employed with the department are required to carry firearms that are approved through the Allen County Common Pleas Court. After completion of the OPATA certified firearm course probation officers are required to participate in firearms training throughout the year the calendar year with annual recertification.
Probation Officers are required to be ORAS certified within the first year of employment and are responsible for maintaining recertification and will be responsible for completing the New Probation Officer hiring through the Ohio Supreme Court.
EQUIPMENT OPERATED:
Computer, telephone, general office equipment, county vehicles, firearm, monitoring devices and mechanical restraints.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of federal, state, and criminal law regarding adult criminal offenders as well as courtroom procedures. Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate actions, deal with a variety of variable in a somewhat unfamiliar context, develop and maintain effective working relationships with Judges, supervisors, co-workers, attorney, law enforcement officials and the public. Define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions and the ability to prepare meaningful, concise, reports as well as maintaining accurate records of daily activities.
