Hostler
Role Summary
The Cross Dock Hostler at ARCHWAY, Inc. is responsible for the safe and efficient movement of trailers within our cross-dock facility. This role is executed primarily outdoors in ARCHWAY’s yard and involves operating yard tractors (hostlers) to position, stage, and organize trailers for loading, unloading, and transfer, supporting our commitment to fast, reliable delivery services. The Hostler plays a key role in maintaining a streamlined operation by ensuring trailers are properly parked and readily available for shipment, all while adhering to ARCHWAY’s high safety and quality standards.
Key Result Areas
Safely operate ARCHWAY’s yard tractors to move, position, and secure trailers in designated areas within the cross-dock yard.
Escort trailers to appropriate bays for loading and unloading, ensuring proper placement to optimize dock operations.
Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard tractors, reporting any mechanical issues or safety hazards immediately.
Communicate effectively with dock personnel, drivers, and warehouse teams to coordinate trailer movements and prioritize load sequencing.
Ensure trailers are properly hooked, unhooked, and parked in compliance with company safety policies.
Support trailer staging, securing, and unhooking processes to facilitate efficient loading and unloading cycles.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe yard environment, following all safety protocols and OSHA regulations.
Support ARCHWAY’s commitment to excellent customer service by ensuring timely trailer movements to meet delivery schedules.
Document trailer activity and assist with inventory and shipping records as needed.
Skills & Qualifications:
Valid hostler/operator license or certification, with experience operating yard tractors in a logistics or cross-dock environment.
Proven safety record and understanding of OSHA and company safety standards.
Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse team.
Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Basic mechanical knowledge to perform simple equipment inspections and troubleshooting.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to operate large vehicles and equipment outdoors in various weather conditions.
Capable of standing, walking, and climbing for extended periods.
Ability to lift and handle objects weighing up to 50 lbs. or more.
