Job description:
The Highland County Commissioners seek a dedicated Deputy Dog Warden to join the Highland County Dog Pound, enforce animal laws, investigate complaints, handle lost pet claims, and promote public animal awareness. This role ensures the safety and well-being of animals and the community.
Essential Functions:
- Manage Department
- Oversee Dog and Kennel operations and staff activities.
- Enforce animal laws and investigate complaints.
- Develop department goals, policies, and procedures.
- Animal Control and Care
- Conduct patrols to manage stray dogs.
- Process lost pet claims and adoptions.
- Maintain a clean and healthy animal shelter.
- Law Enforcement
- Conduct surveys to ensure dog licensing compliance.
- Issue citations and warnings.
- Public Relations
- Promote public awareness about animal control.
- Collaborate with citizen groups and agencies.
- Administrative Duties
- Attend meetings, training, and seminars.
- Meet all safety requirements and OSHA standards.
- Other Duties
- Perform additional tasks as needed.
Qualifications:
- Minimum two years of experience in animal control or a related field.
- Valid Ohio driver’s license and insurability under the County’s vehicle insurance.
Equipment Operated:
- Animal control devices
- Motor vehicle
- Personal computer, computer software, printer, copier, fax machine, calculator, shredder, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to chemicals, hazardous materials, and extreme weather.
- Physical demands include exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 25 to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 25 pounds constantly.
- Potential contact with violent or emotionally distraught persons or vicious animals.
Skills and Abilities:
- Animal Handling: Proficient in using animal control devices, such as control sticks, cages, live traps, and leashes.
- Technical Skills: Skilled in computer operation, including data entry, word processing, and use of office software like Microsoft Office.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with the public, staff, and officials.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to assess situations, recognize unusual or threatening conditions, and determine appropriate actions.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Understanding of animal laws, rules, and regulations, and ability to interpret and apply them in various situations.
- Leadership: Strong supervisory skills, including coaching, counseling, and managing staff performance.
- Public Relations: Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with the public and other agencies.
- Physical Stamina: Capability to perform physically demanding tasks, including lifting, pushing, and pulling heavy objects.
- Customer Service: Strong customer service skills to handle sensitive inquiries and provide assistance to the public.
- Detail-Oriented: High attention to detail for accurate record-keeping and documentation.
- Safety Awareness: Knowledge of workplace safety practices and OSHA standards.
