REPORTS TO : Chief Probation Officer
JOB STATUS : Full-time, Exempt
NORMAL WORKING HOURS : Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
SALARY : $55,000 - $60,000, negotiable depending on experience
CLASSIFICATION FEATURES : This is a highly responsible position that involves a great deal of public contact. The individual in this position performs a variety of probation-related duties under the general supervision of the Chief Probation Officer and serves at the pleasure of the Municipal Court Judge.
Probation Officers are responsible for supervision of large caseloads of misdemeanant offenders, monitoring individual defendants for compliance with court ordered terms of supervision, and providing background information and sentencing recommendations to the court.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES :

- Conducts presentence investigations (PSI), drafts reports and makes sentencing recommendations to the Court, obtaining any/all information as requested by the Court prior to sentencing and presenting it in the manner prescribed by the Court/Chief Probation Officer. Such information includes information obtained directly from the offenders and their treatment providers, prior criminal history and official accounts from law enforcement, witnesses, and victims.
- Supervises offenders on probation and reports violations of probation conditions to the Court. Maintains case records on each offender assigned.
- Promotes rehabilitation, public safety, and connects probationers with community resources. Coordinates required treatment and court-ordered programs with appropriate agencies.
- Supervises the payment of restitution and probation fees.
- Supervises Court programs including First Offender Diversion, Violence Prevention Program, and others.
- Conducts victim outreach and follow-up.
- Processes applications for sealing/expungement of records and performs background/criminal history checks.
- Maintains regular contact with treatment providers, employers, community service placement sites, drug testing agencies, law enforcement agencies, correctional facilities, community-based correction agencies, victim(s) and service agencies and other courts of law.
- Displays professionalism and maintains confidentiality.
- Displays good judgment in all decision-making regarding the supervision of probationers.
- Investigates factual issues at the direction of the Judge as to any defendant or pending case, on issues such as bond, addresses of defendants, victims, and other pertinent case file issues.
- Provides outreach to the community and collaborates with all court departments on matters regarding probation.

KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
- Pass a comprehensive background investigation including FBI & BCI&I Record checks.
- Excellent written and verbal interpersonal communication skills. Able to communicate effectively personally and in writing, by telephone, email, and other forms of communication. Exercises good judgment in making decisions in accordance with laws, regulations, and policies.
- Ability to deescalate and redirect recalcitrant/argumentative individuals.
- Excellent time management skills and ability to organize/prioritize duties. Understands and follows complex oral and written instructions.
- Proficient computer skills and ability to become certified in the use of Ohio LEADS, OHLEG, OCSS, Ohio Court Network Information Systems, Henschen software. Ability to operate standard office equipment including but not limited to personal computers, fax and copy machines, telephones, printers, and other.
- Must maintain accurate records.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.
- Has a Valid Ohio Driver’s License.
- Compliance with Ohio Probation Officer Standards/training pursuant to R.C. §2301.271.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
A four-year degree from an accredited college or university in criminal justice, the social sciences or a related field OR any four-year degree coupled with adequate experience in the criminal justice/social work field. Consideration may be given to persons who have obtained an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related field with prior corrections and/or law enforcement experience.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This position involves occasional standing, bending, stooping, crawling, squatting, lifting, kneeling, and reaching. This position may require the physical ability to take defendants into custody and escort them to and from a holding cell.
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS:
Work in this classification may be performed in a highly stressful environment, involving interaction with persons of all backgrounds. Such interaction may involve citizens, people on probation, and defendants in the courtroom who may be irrational and highly agitated.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check, employment reference checks, a physical examination and a pre-employment drug screen. An applicant with a positive drug test for will not be appointed to the position.
