Job Overview As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the UC College of Medicine (UCCOM) has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. The Department of Family & Community Medicine has played a leading role in fellow, resident, and medical student education since 1974 and continues to focus on improving the health of members of our Cincinnati community and beyond, with a special focus on medically underserved patients. With faculty expertise in areas such as primary care research, palliative care, geriatrics, global health and integrative medicine, the department is advancing the college's commitment to cultivating learning environments, fostering research and scholarship, and providing innovative patient care. The Department of Family and Community Medicine (UCDFM) is recruiting two (2) physicians for a Global Health (GH) Fellowship. The UCDFCM Global Health (GH) Fellowship is a one (1) or two (2) year family medicine fellowship designed for physicians interested in caring for underserved/vulnerable populations while strengthening their clinical and scholarly skills in global health. The two-year fellowship includes the option for tuition remission for completion of Masters of Public Health (MPH) in Global Health. Fellows will deepen their competencies in the following six areas of Global and Underserved Health: Describe and address the determinants of health as a foundation in global and underserved health, Interpret health in the context of the principles of community and population health, Provide high-quality care in low resource settings and for vulnerable populations, Demonstrate effective communication and cultural humility in patient, team, and community relationships, Advocate effectively on an individual, local, and national level within the context of global health ethics, Apply the attitudes and skills of sustainable servant-leadership in multiple healthcare settings including interdisciplinary teams. The GH Fellowship is a non-ACGME-accredited fellowship in which the Fellow is appointed as an entry-level faculty member in the UC Department of Family & Community Medicine. Essential Functions Fellows will work with their appointed GH Fellowship Advisor to develop a specific set of Objectives that achieve the above Competencies. As a result of the GH Fellowship, Fellows will:- Improve their ability to provide high-quality clinical care to meet the needs of patients in low-resource settings and vulnerable populations.
- Develop scholarship, public health, and cross-cultural experience with one of our international partner non-governmental organizations.
- Develop leadership, teaching, and scholarship skills and experience as a UC department faculty member in the Division of Global & Underserved Health.
- Clinical Care: Provide primary care for underserved and immigrant/refugee patients for approximately 24+hrs/week at a City of Cincinnati Primary Care location. LMIC Partner
- Capacity Building: Work with one of our international partners in improving their healthcare mission. Spend four weeks per year in-country as well as longitudinal involvement in our well-established partnership.
- Academic Leadership: Contribute to the academic mission of the Global and Underserved Health Division in the area of Global Health by teaching residents and medical students.
- Completion of a US ACGME-accredited Family Medicine Residency in good standing.
- ABFM Board Certification.
- Medical licensure in the State of Ohio.
- CCLA-level fluency in Spanish is ideal.
- Foundational knowledge in global health, such as the completion of a 1-month medical school course or residency rotation.
- Training in Asylum Medicine as part of a medico-legal partnership with a non-profit law center.
- Tuition remission for a Master's Degree for two-year fellows.
- Master of Public Health degree in Global Health.
- Master of Science in Clinical and Translational Research.
- Appointment: Appointment in the UCDFCM as an entry-level adjunct faculty member.
- Salary: PGY4-plus Salary and Benefits based on UC COM Fellowship Salary Scale and level of fellow.
- CME: PGY4-plus CME Reimbursement based on UCDFCM faculty CME.
- Travel Expenses: Travel expense coverage for two roundtrips and in-country room and board stipend for travel to and work within our international partner's organization
- Tuition remission is available for those pursuing a graduate certificate or Master's degree. This does not include the cost of taxes and additional study costs such as books/supplies.
- Diploma: A University of Cincinnati-approved Certificate of Completion for a Fellowship in Global Health.
