Head Speech & Debate Team Coach
Overview
This position offers an exciting opportunity to cultivate students’ communication skills, foster confidence, and develop their competitive spirit. As the Head Coach of the school's state and nationally recognized team, you will lead a team of 25 to 35 students through an annual season of practices and tournaments. The team is a vital component of the school's extracurricular program and has a long tradition of excellence.
Responsibilities
-Teach students skills in argumentation, research, public speaking, and critical thinking to prepare for competitive events.
-Help students construct cases, develop rebuttal strategies, and refine their speaking styles.
-Schedule practices and tournaments, coordinate travel and lodging, enter students into competitions, and manage related paperwork.
-Mentor students, help them build confidence, and foster a supportive team environment.
-Manage budgets, maintain communication with parents and school staff, handle competition entries and scheduling, and oversee equipment and supplies.
-Supervise and accompany students at tournaments, providing support and guidance.
Qualifications and skills
-A background in communication, education, or a related field, with a strong knowledge of speech and debate formats.
-Excellent written and verbal communication, strong motivational skills, and the ability to work with students of diverse abilities and experience levels.
-Previous experience as a competitor, judge, or coach is preferred.
-A positive attitude, ethical conduct, and the ability to accept constructive criticism are important personal qualities.
-Familiarity with digital research databases and tournament management software is beneficial.
