Admission Counselor

To assist the college in the recruitment and enrollment of students. The Admission Counselor is the primary contact person between the prospective student, their communities, and Hiram College. The counselor makes frequent public presentations regarding Hiram College, its programs, and its services. Admission counselors conduct individual interviews, meetings and group discussion with various stakeholders as directed.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following*:

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including faculty, deans and senior staff, admission office colleagues, students, parents, guidance counselors and alumni.
  • The responsibilities of all admission counselors include interviews and group information sessions, recruitment travel, evaluation of applicants for admission, and regular follow-up communication with students and constituencies
  • Communicate effectively with students and alumni, faculty and administrators. Proficient with social media utilization.
  • Maintain active contact with the designated target recruitment populations as well as the extended recruitment team (students, alumni, agents) in designated recruitment territories.
  • Respond as needed to inquiries from families and prospective students as appropriate. For example, in person, by telephone, email, text, letter, print-on-demand, web content, social media.
  • Because of the wide range of duties and responsibilities associated with this position, an admission counselor must develop and possess:
  • A complete understanding of the admission and recruitment policies of Hiram College.
  • A detailed knowledge of academic programs offered by Hiram.
  • An in-depth knowledge of the policies and procedures governing the distribution of student financial aid.
  • Broad-based knowledge of student activities, residential life, athletic programs, learning support services, and other extra-academic programs and services provided by Hiram.
  • Familiarity with educational records including high school transcripts and evaluation systems, standardized test scores, international educational records, and college transcripts.
  • Each Admission Counselor is also assigned responsibility for the initiation, execution and analysis of a number of special projects. These tasks may vary from year to year at the discretion of your supervisor.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills and excellent attention to detail.
  • Superior interpersonal and public speaking skills. Highly developed written and oral communication skills. Capability of presenting Hiram College in a favorable light with individuals, small groups and large groups.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts between the families of prospective students and Hiram College which arise as part of the admission process of a moderately selective private college.
  • An appreciation for the cyclical nature of admission work and the flexibility to handle a variety of duties and projects throughout the day as well as throughout the year.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse constituencies, including faculty, deans and senior staff, admission office colleagues, students, parents, guidance counselors and alumni.

General Counseling Duties

  • Carry out the normal responsibilities of all admission counselors including interviews and group information sessions, recruitment travel, evaluation of applicants for admission, and regular follow-up communication with students and constituencies
  • communicate effectively with students and alumni, faculty and administrators.
  • maintain active contact with the designated target recruitment populations as well as the extended recruitment team (students, alumni, agents) in designated recruitment territories.
  • respond as needed to inquiries from families and prospective students.

Recruitment Travel

  • Research, plan, coordinate, schedule, execute, and evaluate visitation and recruitment programs in areas assigned, seeking guidance when necessary.
  • Travel approximately 8-12 weeks per semester, out-of-state and internationally when required
  • Visit dozens of high schools, colleges, career centers, college fairs, group information sessions, interviews and college counselor events each year.

Applicant File Review

  • Evaluate candidates for admission to Hiram College through review of their educational credentials and personal communication. Acting on authority delegated by the administration of Hiram College, exercise judgment in reaching an admission decision independently on the majority of these cases.

Supervisory Responsibility

  • Indirect supervision of student workers, as applicable.

Special Projects

  • Accept responsibility for the initiation, execution, and analysis of special programs, projects, and tasks that may vary from year to year, depending on strategic recruitment strategies and departmental needs.
  • Frequently work evenings and weekends as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience

  • Admission experience at a non-profit regionally accredited institution of higher education is desirable

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree required by starting date
