Department Summary
The Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs serves as the University’s senior academic administrator responsible for faculty affairs and faculty development at Ohio University. The role provides institutional leadership for faculty policies, procedures, and processes; supports faculty success across career stages and pathways; and advances excellence in teaching and learning through the oversight of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CTLA) and the Office of Instructional Design (OID).
Position Profile
The position operates within a shared governance framework and plays a central role in Ohio University’s implementation of the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act (AOHEA), the transition from Faculty Handbook provisions to University Policies and Standard Operating Procedures, and the alignment of faculty-related practices with state law, Board of Trustees directives, and institutional strategy.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Oversees multiple direct reports and leads the oversight of the Center for Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (CTLA) and the Office of Instructional Design (OID).
Fiscal Responsibilities
Will oversee a budget of approximately $2.7M
Problem Solving
Must be able to successfully problem solve. The individual in this position acts as a senior member of the Provost Office Leadership team.
Independence of Action
- Acting as the primary administrative liaison to Faculty Senate on behalf of the Provost, including managing Senate resolutions that affect faculty policy, Handbook language, and University policies.
- Leading and coordinating the transition of faculty-related provisions from the Faculty Handbook to University Policies and Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring clarity of authority, procedural integrity, and institutional consistency.
- Overseeing Ohio University’s implementation of faculty-related provisions of the Advance Ohio Higher Education Act (AOHEA), including advising academic leadership on lawful practices related to hiring, evaluation, promotion, tenure, and faculty development.
- Coordinating with University Human Resources, Legal Affairs, Institutional Effectiveness, and academic leadership on faculty personnel matters requiring institutional review or escalation.
Communication and Collaboration
- Works closely with deans, associate deans, chairs, and directors to support effective faculty leadership and administration.
- Collaborates with Faculty Senate and its standing committees in a shared governance environment.
- Serves as a senior member of the Provost’s leadership team, contributing to institutional planning, policy development, and strategic initiatives.
- Represents the Provost’s Office in university-wide discussions related to faculty success, academic quality, and institutional effectiveness.
Physical Requirements
- Office-based administrative position with regular engagement across academic units.
- Some evening or weekend responsibilities associated with academic governance cycles.
- Occasional travel across campuses
Minimum Qualifications
- Earned terminal degree (e.g., Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent) in an academic discipline.
- Eligibility for faculty rank at the associate professor level or higher.
- At least three (3) years of academic administration with responsibility for faculty affairs, governance, or academic policy.
- Demonstrated knowledge of faculty personnel processes, shared governance structures, and higher education administration.
- Proven ability to lead complex, policy-driven initiatives in a collaborative environment.
