Job Description
Walton Family Foundation Fellowship in Education Art Collection (EAC)
The Education Art Collection (EAC) department at the Cleveland Museum of Art is seeking a graduate-level student for an academic year-long Fellowship (August-May) to assist with the rigorous research and documentation of objects in the Education Art Collection. The EAC is a study collection of about 10,000 authentic works of art spanning 6,000 years from around the world and is used in a variety of educational programs. The EAC team is responsible for the care, research, documentation, art handling, and object-based educational programming of the education collection.
In preparation for sharing object records with the public, the Fellow will catalogue, research, expand, and update the curatorial records. Much of the information contained in the records is incomplete and, in some cases, inaccurate. We are expanding our object-based education programming which necessitates sharing accurate and complete information about the EAC online with educational and community partners. In addition, our strategic plan calls for online accessibility of the EAC, which includes offering the public complete and correct information.
The successful candidate will excel at detail-oriented projects and have proven organizational, research, and writing skills. Areas of the collection that need attention include (but are not limited to) Native North American, European and American Decorative Arts, American 20th century works on paper, Japanese woodblock prints, and archeological artefacts from ancient Mediterranean cultures. As part of the interview process, the candidate and EAC manager will discuss the most appropriate area of concentration.
During the Fellowship, the candidate will learn to use the museum’s Athena software, catalogue works of art, write brief art historical summaries of their findings, and learn more about museum education, especially programming that involves direct contact with authentic objects. At the completion of the Fellowship, the candidate will write and present a summary of their work.
By completing the Fellowship, the candidate will learn to physically handle and catalogue objects, improve research skills, learn to use a robust collections management system, and gain knowledge about object-based learning. The curatorial and collection management skills in this internship are foundational for any future career in a collection-based institution.
