Social Worker (Program Coordinator)
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200 -000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.
Qualifications Basic Requirements:- United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
- Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE)
- Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited
- A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work
- Verification of the degree can be made by going to to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work
- Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level

- Grade Determinations: Social Worker (Program Coordinator) GS-12 Experience and Education: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level
- Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment - demonstrating progressively more professional competency
- Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship - or equivalent supervised professional experience
- Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level - and must be able to provide supervision for licensure
- Demonstrated Knowledge - Skills - and Abilities: In addition to the experience above - the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation - negotiation - and monitoring
- (b) Knowledge and ability to write policies - procedures - and/or practice guidelines for the program
- (c) Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program
- (d) Skill in organizing work - setting priorities - meeting multiple deadlines - and evaluating assigned program area(s)

- Physical Requirements: The social work duties include sedentary and ambulation (walking) throughout the medical center and in the community according to the demands of daily tasks
- Light carrying - less than 15 pounds-may be required as part of duties related to storing or moving files
- Working around moving objects or vehicles is required as part of daily ambulating within the medical center around patients who use motorized scooters and wheelchairs
- Working along duties requires working along at intervals during the day (i.e. - documenting progress notes - completing phone calls - etc.)
- Reaching above the shoulder- may be required during daily tasks to access files located in overhead cabinets
- Walking- required approximately 3-4 hours daily associated with walking from assigned office to outpatient clinics and other medical center departments as needed to complete duties of the position

- It is required that this individual be able to operate a motor vehicle as this position and it is expected that the incumbent transport patients off-site as part of their duties
- Work will take place in- and outdoors thus exposing them to the natural elements of the weather
- The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium - dementia - or psychiatric disorders

- In addition - the incumbent must be a skilled communicator capable of developing effective partnerships with local - state - and federal agencies as well as nongovernmental organizations
- Duties include - but are not limited - to: Social Worker (Program Coordinator) GS-12 Clinical Functions: Coordinates admissions for Veterans requesting admission into the MH RRTP
- Collaborates with the MH RRTP Screening Board regarding pending consults
- Utilizes screening to identify emotional - social - and environmental strengths and problems related to diagnosis - illness - treatment - and/or life situation to assist with determination of which MH RRTP program best meets Veterans' needs
- Performs specialized MH RRTP screenings that are based on American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria
- Independently performs case finding functions and outreach - identifying and screening patients for psychosocial needs
- Possesses advanced knowledge and abilities to independently implement treatment - provide counseling or psychotherapy for individuals - families and groups using evidence-based treatments
- Teach and mentor staff and students in the special area of practice and to provide supervision for licensure or specialty certifications
- Independently identifies high-risk patients and provides case management services
- Provides crisis intervention services - seeking to address the cause as well as the presenting complaint - coordinates family conferences and serves as liaison to family members
- Administrative Functions: Coordinates and monitors MH RRTP access - including same day and priority access - for Veterans seeking services within the MH RRTP
- Coordinates and monitors MH RRTP daily operations and clinical programming - including all MH RRTP tracks of care - including Substance Use Disorder (SUD) - Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) - and Domiciliary Care for Homeless Veterans (DCHV)
- Actively participates in MH RRTP screening board and assists staff with track management - including timely discharges - coordination of admissions - and referrals between levels of care and other VA MH RRTP facilities - timely and appropriate care coordination and discharge planning
- Prepares reports and statistics for facility - VISN - and national use and provides analysis and evaluation of clinical program data and computerized programs to identify system-wide trends and needs to enhance the quality of service as they relate to the referral - admission and transition at discharge processes
- NOTE: The incumbent may be required to perform (50%) of their job duties in the community and will be required to utilize a GSA Vehicle
- The Social Worker will successfully complete all facility requirements to drive a GSA Vehicle and transport Veterans
- This includes all pre-employment physicals
- In addition - the incumbent will successfully complete all facility required TMS trainings to drive a GSA Vehicle and transport Veterans
