CDM Smith is seeking a licensed Senior Electrical Design Engineer to lead and support electrical design efforts for challenging, multidisciplinary projects.
This is a hybrid position with a strong preference for candidates based in Columbus, Ohio . The role will support electrical engineering projects across markets including water, wastewater, industrial, federal, and transit facilities.
In this role, you will contribute to power system design, electrical studies, construction-phase services, and technical leadership while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams across an employee-owned firm.

As a Senior Electrical Design Engineer , you will:
- With general direction, create basic to highly complex electrical systems, including electric master system plans, power systems, protection and generation models, facility power systems, sustainability/renewable energy systems, and similar electrical systems.
- Perform power system studies and electrical calculations, including lighting simulations, lighting layouts, communications, fire alarm, security, and related analyses.
- Conduct site reviews and field studies to verify existing conditions and ensure designs align with project and location-specific requirements.
- Develop electrical plans, specifications, calculations, reports, and other technical deliverables.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior staff; may supervise junior engineers on project work.
- Support construction-phase services, including reviews, responses, and coordination as needed.
- Collaborate with sales and project teams on proposals for current and prospective clients.
- Review proposal content for alignment with firm standards, industry best practices, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
- Participate in client meetings to understand current and future design needs.
- Contribute to CDM Smith’s Technical Knowledge Management program by developing technical documentation, white papers, and special design guidance.
- Represent the firm at conferences, symposia, and industry events in coordination with sales and technical leadership.
- Perform other duties as required.

Skills & Abilities:- Strong knowledge of electrical engineering design principles.
- Advanced knowledge of CADD, 3D, and 4D design software and practices.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word and Excel.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
- Ability to lead technical work, coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, and mentor junior staff.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical Technology, or a related discipline.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- 7 years of relevant experience.
- Equivalent directly related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required depending on project needs, workload, and business demands.
- Experience with electrical power systems for water, wastewater, industrial, federal, and transit facilities.
- Familiarity with industry and federal codes and standards, including NEC, NFPA, NESC, IEEE, and UFC.
- Proficiency in power system planning.
- Experience with distributed generation, alternative energy, and microgrid systems.
- Experience designing, troubleshooting, and problem-solving for medium-voltage distribution systems, including substations, switchgear, and standby generation systems.
- Proficiency with SKM Power*Tools and ETAP.
- Experience with additional electrical system analysis software such as EasyPower, EDSA/Paladin, CYME, or Milsoft.
- Published work in IEEE Journals, IEEE Transactions, or other technical journals is a plus.
