Department Summary
Personal Trainers are under the supervision of the Personal Training Student Supervisor, the Fitness Graduate Assistant, and the Assistant Director of Well-Being & Fitness within the Department of Well-Being and Recreation as part of the Division of Student Affairs. The role of the Personal Trainer is to promote and instruct fitness in a healthy and safe way to patrons and clients of the Ping Recreation Center. The Personal Trainer performs a variety of fitness programs that are both educational and motivational. The Personal Trainer provides customer service which promotes patron well-being in accordance with Ohio University Well-Being & Recreation’s policies and procedures to create a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop, implement, and instruct a variety of personal training and group training sessions for clients
- Provide encouragement and expertise for the client in support of their health and well-being goals
- Administer, track, and evaluate health history questionnaires, fitness assessments, and other pre-participation documentation pertaining to individual exercise programs
- Track completion of personal training sessions for all clients currently training via the personal training tracking document
- Follow fitness floor expectations when not scheduled for personal training or group training
- Assist with leading fitness programs and running special events throughout the year.
JOB SPECIFIC TASKS
- Conduct personal training sessions with clients interested in improving specific areas of their health
- Administer proper Fitness and Body Composition Assessments of client
- Uphold the rules and regulations of the Ping Weight Room and Cardio Room
- Other duties as assigned by the Personal Training Supervisor, Fitness Graduate Assistant, or Assistant Director of Well-Being & Fitness
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE
- Extensive knowledge in the area of personal training
- General knowledge of exercise physiology
- Ability to be an effective leader among peers
- Possess proficient time management skills, organizational skills, communication skills, and work ethic
- Demonstrate the willingness and ability to learn and continue education
- Display high level of professionalism in dealing with customers and co-workers
- Be able make sound decisions
- Be flexible and able to work well with others
- Maintain CPR/First Aid Certification
Job Profile
Leads recreational classes or activities centering on fitness, sports, or wellness programs for students. May include creating lesson plans, developing personal training plans, maintaining safety standards, and fostering a positive environment. Certification may be required to lead certain programs.
Level Summary
Performs basic tasks and assists with administrative or operational duties under supervision. Roles are entry-level and aimed at providing exposure to workplace environments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Limited supervisory responsibilities. May supervise other student workers.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
No budgetary responsibility.
Problem Solving:
Addresses routine, well-defined problems under supervision.
Independence of Action:
Works under close supervision.
Communication and Collaboration:
Communicates primarily with supervisor and peers. Collaborates with team members to accomplish tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled for classes at Ohio University, Hocking College, another post-secondary education institution, or a secondary school during the current semester, immediate previous semester, or immediate upcoming semester. Able to follow instructions and complete tasks within deadlines. Basic knowledge of office software and communication tools. Departments may have specific minimum requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Maintain an NCCA Accredited Personal Training Certification (ACE, NASM, ACSM, NSCA, etc.)
Working Condition/Physical Demands:
This role is active, must be able to lift 25-50 pounds and help other people lift weights as well.
