Full Time Instructor, Psychology
Job Description Summary
The Department of Psychology at Shawnee State University invites applications for a Full-Time Instructor (FTI) of Psychology with an anticipated start date of August 2026. Shawnee State University is a student-centered public university serving a diverse population, including many first-generation college students, in Portsmouth, Ohio. This position is primarily instructional and supports high-demand 1000- and 2000-level psychology courses serving General Education, pre-major, and psychology major students. The position is not tenure-track. Teaching comprises up to 90 percent of workload in accordance with FTI guidelines.
Responsibilities
- Teach primarily 1000- and 2000-level undergraduate psychology courses.
- Priority coverage includes Introduction to Psychology, Child and Adolescent Psychology, and service courses such as Lifespan Development for the Health Sciences and, potentially, Educational Psychology.
- Maintain regular office hours and engage in on-campus student interaction.
- Support undeclared students and students exploring or transitioning into the psychology major.
- Participate in departmental and university service consistent with the FTI role.

Shawnee State University is the regional state university for South-Central Ohio. It is a primarily undergraduate, four-year public university with limited graduate degree programs. Enrollment is approximately 3,700 students. Shawnee State is located on the Ohio River in Portsmouth, Ohio – a small city nestled in a beautiful, rural area of Southern Ohio. Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Master's degree in Psychology or a closely related field from a regionally accredited institution by the start date.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate psychology courses effectively.
- Professional experience related to psychology or higher education teaching.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior college-level teaching experience.
- Commitment to undergraduate teaching and student success.
- Ability to teach a range of lower-division psychology courses.
- Interest in supporting first-generation and undecided students.
- Demonstrated strong commitment to on-campus interactions with students.
