Part-time Staff: Lab Assistant - Division of Health Professions (Medical Assisting/Phlebotomy)

The MDAS Lab Assistant will support the daily operations of the Medical Assisting Laboratory by preparing and maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, setting up clinical practice stations, and ensuring compliance with all safety, infection control, and quality standards. The Lab Assistant will assist faculty by organizing materials and providing logistical support during lab sessions but will not engage in instructional activities. This position plays an integral role in maintaining an efficient, organized, and safe laboratory environment that supports student learning.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare laboratory equipment, instruments, and materials for scheduled classes, research, and student practice.
  • Assist students and faculty in setting up, operating, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the lab, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory of lab supplies, materials, and equipment; prepare orders as needed.
  • Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on laboratory equipment.
  • Assist in the coordination and setup of laboratory simulations, experiments, and demonstrations.
  • Support faculty with student skill evaluations and laboratory-based assessments.
  • Ensure safe disposal of laboratory waste and adherence to safety regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the MDAS Program Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Training and Experience Required/Preferred

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory or healthcare setting.
  • Strong understanding of safety protocols and infection control.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Basic knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Ability to set up and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.

Physical Activity Level

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 25 lbs. for extended periods of time.
  • Manual dexterity to operate and maintain laboratory equipment.
  • Ability to work in a laboratory environment with exposure to standard lab chemicals and equipment

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT 

  • This is a 12-month, part-time, non-exempt position. The hourly rate is in grade 5A of the Staff Salary Schedule . The anticipated hiring range is $15.73/hour – $19.66/hour.
  • Non-insurance benefits include paid time away (vacation, personal, sick, and holiday pay) and prorated tuition.
  • The work schedule of up to 6 hours per week in the fall semester and 12 hours per week in the spring semester is as follows: Monday – Wednesday, 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
  • Please note: The final offer for the successful candidate is targeted to fall within the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range but will be based upon an assessment of internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications in relation to the minimum and/or preferred job requirement(s).
