Veterinary Assistant

The College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinary Medical Center seeks a Veterinary Assistant to join the Radiology Ultrasound team. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to assist in the provision of care to ill and injured animals as wells a providing assistance to clinicians, staff and professional students in the days to day operations of the Veterinary Medical Center. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following: providing basic patient care functions; assisting in the collection of lab specimens such as blood, urine, and feces for testing; assisting with patient assessment, restraint and treatments; assisting with training student employees in prescribed care of animals; comforting and caring for hospitalized animal patients; walking patients and providing clean housing, food, and water at all times; monitoring patients and notifying higher level technician or veterinarian of any unusual changes or symptoms; transporting patients within the Veterinary Medical Center; stocking supplies including feed, medical supplies and equipment; cleaning and disinfecting treatment areas, animals housing units, adjacent areas and supporting equipment following prescribed sanitation procedures and observing rules of epidemiology to prevent spread of disease; carrying out prescribed bedding; performing daily cleaning of outdoor dog exercise areas and VMC entrances; cleaning of all animal areas including windows, floors, light covers, ledges, hallways, vents, receiving rooms etc.; notifying supervisor of need for non-routine repairs; assisting with laundry; providing clerical support when necessary; and other duties as assigned.

The successful candidates will be expected to work 40 hours a week on with a schedule to be determined by the business unit. This position is subject to a background check prior to starting.

Minimum Qualifications:

High School diploma or GED. 0 years of relevant experience required. 0-2 years of relevant experience preferred.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to animal dander and/or zoonotic diseases; exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or bio hazardous waste; standing for long periods of time; pushing/pulling/lifting up to 75 pounds.
