Under general supervision, coordinates programming activities related to Behind the Scenes Tours and Interpretive Programs. This individual will be the primary person in charge of tour registration, delivery and evaluation. They will coordinate with animal areas to maximize offerings and communicate when tours will take place. They will train the part time interpreters that will support tours throughout the year. Occasionally assists in other department programs in a teaching role, including, but not limited to, overnight programs, camps, homeschool programs, and outreach. Reports to the Associate Curator of Education. This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and requires forty hours per scheduled work week.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSABILITIES
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Prepares tour descriptions and SOPs.
- Orders materials required for tour delivery.
- Acts as the primary guide for Behind the Scenes Tours.
- Oversees the training of additional tour guides to increase offerings.
- Works with animal departments to plan and develop tour areas and schedules.
- Provides communication to all parties as tours are booked.
- Maintains the registration and statistics for tours and interpretive programs.
- Conducts evaluations of the tour experiences and guest experience surveys
- Tracks tour expenses and revenue
- Provide tour marketing recommendations
- Implements various tour marketing strategies in consultation with appropriate staff
- Collaborates with programmer team in the creation of interpretive talks.
- Assists Interpretive staff to deliver interpretation in the Museum, Nature's Neighborhood, and throughout the Zoo.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Receives, reviews, prepares and/or submits various reports and records including confirmations, department accounts, research reports, lesson plans, use reports, budget reports, purchase requisitions and general office correspondence.
- Utilizes various types of technology and software including computer, multimedia equipment, registration and general office software.
- Serve as department point person in absence of Education Department management.
- Work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by programming schedule or other department needs.
- Assist with other Education Department functions including but not limited to facilitation, preparation and execution of other interpretive programming.
- Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines including computer, copier, telephone, radio, etc.
- Work involves standing, walking, bending, reaching, crouching, etc. for periods of time.
- Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of twenty to thirty pounds.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINNIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's degree in education, biology or a related field as well as a minimum of one year of experience in public programming in an informal setting.
- Must have a valid drivers' license and be insurable by the fleet insurance carrier.
- Completion of Certified Interpretive Guide training is preferred
