About The Department

Based on the Carnegie Foundation Classification System, The University of Cincinnati ( is a Doctoral Granting Research University with very high research activity (RU/VH). Located in Cincinnati, Ohio, it is part of Ohio’s higher education system with over 50,000 students enrolled. The Health Promotion and Education Program is in the School of Human Services in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, Human Services, and Information Technology (CECH). The School of Human Services also includes undergraduate and graduate programs in Counseling, Exercise Science, Behavior Analysis, School Psychology, Substance Abuse Counseling, and Sport Administration.

The School of Human Services is a leader in online course and program development, and there are many active collaborative activities across programs and with community partners. Within the School, the Health Promotion and Education program has 7 full-time faculty and a thriving student body. The program currently offers a Master of Science in Community Health and Prevention Science (fully online), a PhD in Health Education (on campus), a concentration in Health Education and Health Promotion in a Master of Public Health (MPH) program (hybrid with online and on campus classes) and a concentration in Health Promotion and Education in a Bachelor of Science in Public Health (BSPH) (both online and on campus). The MPH and BSPH programs are collaborations between CECH and the College of Medicine. The MPH program is CEPH-accredited. The BSPH will be seeking accreditation under the MPH program.

Job Overview

The Health Promotion and Education Program in the School of Human Services at the University of Cincinnati is currently accepting applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The successful applicant will be expected to further the University's excellence in teaching and research (including obtaining external funding, publishing, and presenting). Teaching responsibilities will be both online and on campus.

Essential Functions

  • Conducting scholarly research in health education, public health, and/or prevention science, publishing research, presenting research at conferences, and obtaining external funding (e.g., grant writing).
  • Teaching undergraduate and graduate coursework in health promotion and education, public health, and prevention science including courses on topics such as foundations in health promotion and education, statistics, epidemiology, public health, and grant writing.
  • Supervising student practicum and capstone experiences as well as theses and dissertations.
  • Advising and mentoring graduate students.
  • Contributing to program development within the Health Promotion and Education program.
  • Engaging in university, professional, and community service, including but not limited to serving on search committees, scholarship review committees, reappointment, promotion, and tenure review committees, peer reviewing for journals, and service on workgroups of professional organizations.


Minimum Requirements

Prior to the effective date of appointment, all of the following are required:

  • Doctorate in Health Education, Public Health, or related field
  • One peer-reviewed publication and one other work in progress in the area of health promotion and education, public health, or prevention science
  • Experience teaching at least one undergraduate or graduate course in health promotion and education, public health, or prevention science (online or in[1]person; instructor-of-record or teaching assistant experience is acceptable).
  • Experience in grant writing or external funding, as evidenced by submission of at least one grant/funding proposal


Required Education

  • Must have obtained a Doctorate or terminal degree from a regionally accredited college or university of recognized standing in a field appropriate to the requirements of the position. For positions within Performing and Studio Arts or Nursing, an appropriate Master’s degree may replace the Doctoral requirement.


Required Experience

  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching and research evidenced by strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals. Candidates for a tenured appointment should demonstrate intellectual leadership and impact on the field and potential significant contributions to the department, University of Cincinnati, and wider scholarly community.
