What is the Opportunity?

The High Voltage Competency Assessor & Trainer will support the delivery of electrical safety training and workforce competency assessments across utility and infrastructure projects throughout the United States. Operating as part of the Mobile Training Centre team, this role combines deep high-voltage field expertise with adult learning and coaching capabilities to ensure workers are equipped to perform their work safely, competently, and in compliance with industry standards. The Assessor & Trainer will deliver hands-on training, conduct practical competency evaluations, identify skill gaps, and provide field-based coaching that strengthens electrical safety performance, reduces risk, and reinforces a culture of operational excellence across Aecon's utility and energized work environments.

What You'll Do Here:

  • Deliver instructor-led, field-informed, and practical high-voltage electrical safety training through the Mobile Training Centre and at Aecon project sites across the United States.
  • Conduct competency assessments for workers involved in high-voltage, utility, overhead, underground, substation, distribution, transmission, energized, and de-energized electrical work, using approved tools, observations, scenario-based discussion, and practical evaluation methods.
  • Assess worker understanding and practical application of electrical hazard recognition, safe work planning, job briefing/JARR quality, minimum approach distance, grounding and bonding principles, lockout/tagout or energy isolation, switching awareness, PPE selection, insulated tools, equipment readiness, and emergency response expectations.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to lineworkers, apprentices, forepersons, supervisors, and project/EHS leaders, including identification of competency gaps and recommended follow-up training or restrictions where appropriate.
  • Support development and continuous improvement of high-voltage training content, assessment checklists, practical scenarios, field coaching guides, simulator-supported exercises where applicable, and documentation practices.
  • Facilitate or support training related to electrical safety, energy isolation, lockout/tagout, arc flash awareness, utility work planning, work near energized systems, critical risk controls, rescue preparedness, and incident learning.
  • Partner with the Driver / Operator Assessor and EHS Technical Trainer to coordinate Mobile Training Centre scheduling, site setup, classroom readiness, materials, attendance records, and learner experience.
  • Review trends from assessments, incident learning, audit findings, safety observations, and project feedback to identify recurring high-voltage work risks and opportunities to strengthen training outcomes.
  • Support client-, joint venture-, or partner-facing demonstrations and discussions where high-voltage work competency, electrical safety expectations, or Mobile Training Centre capabilities are being presented.
  • Maintain accurate records of training delivery, competency assessments, attendance, assessment outcomes, corrective actions, and recommendations in alignment with Aecon requirements.

What You Bring to the Team:

  • Extensive field experience in high-voltage utility work, preferably as a journey-level lineworker/lineman, powerline technician, electrical utility trainer, foreperson, or equivalent high-voltage technical role.
  • Strong practical knowledge of overhead and underground distribution/transmission work, substation or utility environments, energized and de-energized work planning, electrical hazards, and safe work controls.
  • Demonstrated ability to train, coach, mentor, or assess utility workers, apprentices, line crews, or other workers performing safety-sensitive electrical work.
  • Working knowledge of applicable U.S. electrical safety requirements and industry practices, including OSHA expectations for electric power generation, transmission and distribution work; knowledge of NFPA 70E or equivalent electrical safe work practices is considered an asset.
  • Ability to evaluate competency objectively, document assessment results clearly, and provide practical feedback to experienced workers and supervisors.
  • Strong understanding of grounding and bonding, minimum approach distances, switching/clearance concepts, job briefing quality, emergency response/rescue expectations, electrical PPE, and work around energized systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel extensively across the United States with the Mobile Training Centre crew; Class A CDL or willingness/ability to obtain one is considered an asset.
  • Comfort using Microsoft Office, tablets, training records systems, presentation equipment, and technology-enabled learning tools.
  • First Aid/CPR, pole-top/bucket rescue, OSHA Outreach, electrical safety trainer, NCCER, apprenticeship instructor, or equivalent utility/electrical training credential is considered an asset.

The expected salary range for this role is $95,000 - $120,000 per year.

Individual pay is determined based on several factors, including work location, education, experience, unique skills and job conditions. Other considerations may include certifications, specialized training, and the complexity or scope of the role.
