Anticipated Opening for 2026-2027 School Year
Bus Drivers – Transportation Department
This position will work a minimum of six (6) hours per day and will be compensated according to the negotiated salary schedule.
Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED and either currently hold or be eligible to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements.
No CDL? We Provide Training!
Individuals who do not currently possess a Class B CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements are encouraged to apply. Marion City Schools offers training with a certified on-board instructor to help candidates obtain the necessary licensing and endorsements.
Training includes:
- Behind-the-wheel and classroom instruction necessary to obtain a Class B CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements
- Potential employment opportunities as a substitute bus aide during the training process
Training Costs and Reimbursement
Trainees are responsible for the initial costs associated with obtaining a temporary permit, CDL testing, and the CDL license. These expenses are approximately $125.00.
Upon successful completion of testing and official employment with Marion City Schools as a bus driver, these expenses will be reimbursed. The only cost not reimbursed is the required background check fee.
Training Agreement
Marion City Schools makes a significant investment in the training and certification of new bus drivers. Therefore, all trainees participating in the district-sponsored CDL training program will be required to sign a Training Reimbursement Agreement. Employees who receive district-sponsored training must remain employed as a bus driver with Marion City Schools for a minimum of two (2) years following completion of training. Employees who voluntarily leave the district before fulfilling the two-year commitment may be required to reimburse the district for all training-related costs incurred on their behalf in accordance with the terms of the signed agreement.
Minimum Requirements for Ohio School Bus Drivers
To become a certified school bus driver in Ohio, applicants must:
Be at least 21 years of age- Possess a minimum of two (2) years of driving experience
- Obtain and maintain a valid Class B CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements
- Successfully complete Ohio's required pre-service school bus driver training program
- Pass all required pre-employment drug and alcohol testing
- Pass Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) background checks
- Maintain an acceptable driving record with minimal points and no serious disqualifying violations
- Successfully complete annual medical examinations required for school bus driver certification

Field trips will be compensated at the driver's current hourly rate, with a minimum of two (2) hours paid per trip, effective July 1, 2025.
Drive time and idle time will be paid at the current hourly rate.
JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: School Bus Driver
RESPONSIBLE TO: Transportation Supervisor
DEPARTMENT: Transportation
CLASSIFICATION: Bus Driver
LENGTH OF CONTRACT: Nine-month contract; 188-day contract (hours depend on assigned route)
GENERAL DUTIES:
Safely operate a school bus transporting students to and from their homes and schools and on extra trips. One year of previous school bus driving experience is preferred.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Class B CDL with School Bus (S) and Passenger (P) endorsements, or ability to obtain through district-sponsored training
- Valid Ohio Pre-Service Certificate or ability to obtain certification
- Physical capabilities necessary to perform duties without restrictions
- Successful completion of required background checks, drug and alcohol screening, and annual medical certification requirements
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
- Drives the school bus on assigned routes, picking up and discharging students at designated locations
- Drives the school bus on extra trips as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor
- Observes all laws and regulations regarding the operation of a school bus
- Maintains orderly conduct of students on the bus at all times
- Completes reports on student misconduct when necessary
- Completes required reports regarding students, stops, mileage, and time
- Checks tires, wheels, lights, emergency equipment, and other safety items daily
- Reports mechanical deficiencies and failures immediately to the Transportation Mechanic
- Cleans the inside of the bus daily and exterior as needed
- Reports all accidents to law enforcement and the Transportation Supervisor
- Maintains fuel levels and checks oil and water regularly
- Attends safety meetings as directed
- Administers necessary first aid in the event of an accident
- Conducts required evacuation and safety drills
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor/designee
