Pathology Assistant Job Details

Pathology Assistant Qualifications

• At least 1 year of experience as a Pathology Assistant in a hospital or clinical setting
• Master's Degree of Science in Pathologists' Assistant (required)
• Bachelor's Degree from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program or in a biological science (prior to 2005)
• PA-ASCP certification (Pathologist Assistant Certification)
• Ability to pass all required health screenings and background checks
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to regulatory compliance in healthcare

Pathology Assistant Responsibilities

• Independently prepare complex and routine patient specimens for surgical pathology processing and special procedures
• Perform macroscopic dissection and detailed description of surgical specimens
• Conduct intraoperative frozen sectioning procedures, including gross description, tissue selection, staining, and cutting
• Process tissue for ancillary studies (electron microscopy, lymphoma protocols, cytogenetics, immunofluorescence, microbiology, research)
• Collaborate with healthcare professionals and clinical staff for timely and accurate communication of specimen findings
• Maintain accurate records of all specimen dissections and laboratory processing procedures
• Participate in quality assurance and control activities, including instrument maintenance and troubleshooting
• Adhere to hospital safety protocols for handling and disposal of hazardous materials
• Stay current with advancements in surgical pathology and laboratory medicine through continuing education
• Provide training and guidance to surgical pathology technicians, specimen processors, residents, and medical students
