Job Description
Job Title: Muffler, Exhaust, and Undercarriage Specialist
Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented Muffler, Exhaust, and Undercarriage Specialist to join our team. This role focuses on diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining vehicle exhaust systems and comprehensive undercarriage components to deliver top-tier performance, safety, and customer satisfaction. The ideal candidate brings hands-on expertise in exhaust fabrication/repairs and undercarriage systems, strong problem-solving abilities, and a dedication to high-quality automotive service.
Pillars of Success in This Role
A great attitude, strong work ethic, and genuine care for the quality of your work are the top pillars to success here. We value technicians who show up ready to give their best every day, take pride in their craftsmanship, treat vehicles and customers with respect, and contribute positively to the team. These qualities drive excellence, customer loyalty, and long-term growth in our shop more than any single technical skill.
Key Responsibilities
Muffler and Exhaust System Repairs
- Diagnose and repair issues across the full exhaust system, including mufflers, catalytic converters, exhaust pipes, manifolds, resonators, hangers, and oxygen sensors.
- Perform precise welding, cutting, bending, and custom fabrication to replace or modify exhaust components (including custom performance setups).
- Conduct thorough inspections for leaks, corrosion, damage, rattles, and compliance with emissions standards.
- Install aftermarket, OEM, or performance exhaust systems per customer specifications.
Brake Systems (Disc and Drum)
- Diagnose, service, and repair complete hydraulic brake systems, including disc brakes (calipers, pistons, pads, rotors/discs) and drum brakes (wheel cylinders, brake shoes, hardware, springs, adjusters, backing plates, and drums).
- Inspect, replace rotors/discs; machine or replace drums as needed for optimal friction surface and performance.
- Perform full brake jobs: replace pads/shoes, hardware, and related components; clean, lubricate, and adjust for proper contact, pedal feel, and even braking.
- Diagnose and repair hydraulic components, including master cylinder (bleeding, bench bleeding, replacement for leaks or internal bypass), brake booster (vacuum/power assist testing and replacement), brake lines (steel/rigid), flexible hoses (for cracks, swelling, or leaks), and proportioning/combination valves.
- Identify and correct issues such as brake fade, pulling, noise, spongy pedal, uneven wear, drag, or ABS/traction control-related problems.
- Flush and replace brake fluid; bleed the system to remove air and restore firm pedal response.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and perform test drives to verify proper braking efficiency and feel.
Engine and Transmission Mounts
- Diagnose worn, cracked, collapsed, or broken engine mounts, transmission mounts, and torque strut mounts through visual inspection, pry-bar testing, and symptom evaluation (e.g., excessive vibration, clunking during shifts/acceleration, engine movement, or misalignment).
- Safely support and lift the engine/transmission using hoists, jacks, or support bars to remove and replace mounts.
- Inspect and replace related hardware such as mount bolts, heat shields, insulators, and brackets.
- Perform alignment checks and adjustments post-replacement to ensure proper driveline angles and prevent premature wear on CV joints, axles, or exhaust components.
- Test-drive vehicles to confirm elimination of vibrations, improved ride quality, and proper powertrain behavior.
Wheel Bearings
- Inspect, diagnose, and replace front/rear wheel bearings and hubs to restore smooth, quiet, and safe operation.
- Use bearing presses, pullers, and specialized tools to ensure proper seating, preload, and alignment.
- Identify early failure signs (e.g., grinding, humming, wheel play) and prevent related damage.
Tie Rods and Steering Components
- Inspect and replace inner/outer tie rods, adjusting sleeves, and related steering linkage to maintain precise alignment and control.
- Diagnose symptoms like steering vibration, wander, or uneven tire wear and recommend necessary repairs or alignments.
- Collaborate with alignment specialists to achieve factory or performance specs.
Shocks, Struts, and Suspension
- Diagnose and replace worn shocks, struts, strut mounts, cartridges, and related components to enhance ride quality, handling, and stability.
- Inspect mounting hardware, bushings, springs, and other suspension parts for wear or damage.
- Perform post-repair test drives to verify proper function and customer satisfaction.
Additional Undercarriage Components
- Ball Joints: Inspect, diagnose, and replace upper/lower ball joints to preserve suspension integrity and steering precision.
- Control Arms: Diagnose and replace damaged or worn control arms, bushings, and shafts for proper alignment and ride.
- CV Joints and Axles: Inspect, repair, or replace CV joints, boots, and drive axles to eliminate clicking, vibrations, or driveline issues.
- Sway Bars and Links: Replace sway bar links, bushings, or bars to reduce body roll and improve cornering stability.
- Perform complete undercarriage inspections to proactively identify emerging issues and recommend preventive maintenance.
General Duties
- Utilize diagnostic tools (e.g., OBD-II scanners, smoke machines, listening devices) to accurately pinpoint exhaust and undercarriage problems.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area while adhering to all shop safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Communicate clearly and professionally with service writers, leads, and customers about repair needs, findings, timelines, and recommendations.
- Stay current with industry advancements, new tools, repair techniques, and regulations through ongoing training and certifications (strongly preferred).
- Perform other related duties and shop tasks as assigned to support team success.
Note: This list covers the primary responsibilities but is not exhaustive. Day-to-day tasks may vary based on shop needs, customer demands, and seasonal workloads.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; vocational/technical training in automotive repair preferred.
- Minimum 3+ years of hands-on experience as an automotive technician, with proven focus on exhaust systems and undercarriage/suspension/powertrain mount repairs.
- Strong expertise in diagnosing and repairing the components listed above.
- Proficiency in welding (MIG), exhaust fabrication, and use of shop tools/equipment (including engine/transmission support tools).
- Familiarity with diagnostic equipment, hand/power tools, lifts, and alignment tools.
- Valid driver's license with clean record and ability to safely test-drive vehicles.
- Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and time-management skills.
- Strong communication and customer service abilities.
- Ability to work independently or collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
- ASE certifications (especially A4 Suspension & Steering, A5 Brakes, X1 Exhaust Systems, or Undercar Specialist designation) are highly preferred and may lead to higher compensation.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs regularly and work in confined spaces under vehicles.
- Comfortable with prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and working in various positions.
- Tolerance for exposure to noise, automotive fumes, fluids, and chemicals (with proper PPE and ventilation).
Work Environment & Benefits
- Full-time position (typically 40 hours/week), with potential for overtime.
- Shop-based environment with exposure to typical automotive hazards.
- Opportunities for professional growth, additional training, and advancement into lead or specialized roles.
- Competitive hourly wage based on experience, skills, and certifications.
