Overview: Mid-West Forge is seeking a motivated and goal-oriented EHS Intern to join our Environmental Health & Safety team. This internship provides hands-on experience supporting workplace safety initiatives, regulatory compliance, and machine safety improvements within a heavy manufacturing environment.
The intern will work closely with the EH&S Manager and cross-functional teams including engineering, maintenance, HR, and operations on a variety of projects related to machine safety, hazard identification, safety training, and continuous improvement.
This position is ideal for a student interested in pursuing a career in Environmental Health & Safety, Safety Engineering, or Industrial Safety and looking to gain real-world experience in manufacturing safety programs, safety audits, machine risk reduction, and regulatory compliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Conduct machine safety risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify risks associated with equipment and manufacturing processes.
• Improve machine safety through engineering controls, guarding solutions, and safety system design.
• Investigate workplace incidents, near misses, and safety concerns to determine root causes and implement corrective actions.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations such as OSHA, ANSI B11, ISO 12100, ISO 13849, NFPA 79, and ISO 45001.
• Collaborate with engineering and operations teams to integrate safety into equipment design, machine modifications, and capital projects.
• Monitor workplace conditions through safety audits and inspections to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Lead safety initiatives that support continuous improvement in machine safety and operational safety performance.
• Maintain safety records, incident reports, and compliance documentation.
• Support emergency preparedness planning, including evacuation procedures and incident response.
• Support continuous improvement of the industrial hygiene program by helping identify, evaluate, and reduce occupational exposures (e.g., noise, fumes, dust, and heat) through data collection, workplace monitoring, and collaboration on engineering and administrative controls.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This role has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience:
• Enrollment in a bachelor’s degree program in Safety Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field. At least one year of related experience or studies.
• Strong knowledge of safety regulations and standards including OSHA, ANSI, NFPA, and ISO standards.
• Experience with machine risk assessment methodologies including JHA, FMEA, HAZOP, or similar tools.

? Ability to navigate basic technology including but not limited to the use of digital self-service platforms, time clocks and other systems where applicable.
? Experience with Microsoft office, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook

Physical Demands:
• Stand, walk, push, pull, squat, bend, and reach during shifts.
• Use carts, dollies, and jacks to transport materials if needed.
• Must be able to occasionally lift and or move up to 40lbs.
• Acclimate to high noise and vibration levels in workspaces.
• Wear and adhere to all PPE guidelines including hard hats, protective eye wear, ear plugs, and approved footwear with metatarsal and steel toe safeguards.
Work Environment: The EH&S Intern will be based in our Administrative Office building, but will frequently need to audit or work on projects in our on-site manufacturing facilities. These areas feature historic machinery, robots, and shipping lanes. Tasks in the plants often involve being near heat, noise, debris, conveyor systems, and other potentially hazardous equipment. Additionally, each department experiences high foot and overhead traffic from material movement, which can result in vibrations and airborne disturbances.
