Job Title:

Shop Manager – Water Treatment Manufacturing

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced and organized Shop Manager to lead operations within our water treatment manufacturing facility. The Shop Manager will oversee production teams, coordinate with engineering and purchasing, manage subcontractors, and ensure all projects meet the company’s high standards for quality, safety, and performance. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who understands both the technical and human aspects of managing a production team, with a focus on efficiency, communication, and craftsmanship.

Key Responsibilities:

Production & Operations Management

  • Supervise daily shop operations, including scheduling, workflow coordination, and resource allocation.
  • Lead and support shop personnel to promote efficiency, accuracy, and high-quality workmanship.
  • Manage subcontractors and coordinate outsourced work to align with project deadlines and quality requirements.
  • Oversee production progress to ensure work aligns with design specifications, project timelines, and budgeted hours.
  • Manage and review employee timecards, tracking labor against project and non-project hours.
  • Collaborate with ownership and leadership to analyze project profitability and job costing on a regular basis.
  • Prepare and submit weekly project reports showing percent completion versus budgeted hours.
  • Participate in production planning meetings and provide insight on scheduling, resource needs, and progress updates.

Engineering Coordination & Documentation

  • Review drawings, schematics, and P&IDs in coordination with the engineering department prior to release for purchasing or manufacturing.
  • Verify design accuracy and manufacturability, and communicate any required clarifications or changes.
  • Manage and participate in the ECR/ECN (Engineering Change Request/Notice) process, ensuring accurate implementation and clear communication across departments.
  • Maintain up-to-date documentation and ensure all shop builds reflect the latest approved revisions.

Quality Control & Technical Oversight

  • Implement and uphold rigorous Quality Control (QC) standards across all production activities.
  • Review and monitor kitting processes; identify and report missing or incorrect components to management.
  • Conduct and document testing, inspection, and QC verification of completed systems prior to shipment.
  • Read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and technical drawings to confirm accuracy throughout assembly and testing.
  • Ensure compliance with all company, customer, and industry quality requirements.

Team Leadership & Shop Administration

  • Conduct employee performance reviews and provide feedback, training, and mentorship.
  • Manage tooling, equipment, and shop assets — ensuring proper use, maintenance, and readiness.
  • Maintain organized workspaces, enforce safety procedures, and promote a clean, efficient environment.
  • Oversee shipping preparation and logistics coordination for completed systems and components.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and clear communication within the shop.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in manufacturing, assembly, or industrial production (water treatment preferred).
  • 2+ years in a supervisory, lead, or shop management position.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret P&IDs, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Experience with drawing reviews and engineering coordination prior to production release.
  • Familiarity with ECR/ECN processes and effective cross-department communication.
  • Proven experience in implementing and maintaining high-quality control standards.
  • Working knowledge of job costing, time tracking, and production management tools.
  • Excellent leadership, organization, and communication skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Excel, email, and scheduling or ERP software.

Preferred Skills:

  • Project management experience , including planning, scheduling, and resource coordination.
  • People management and team development skills.
  • Advanced proficiency in reading and interpreting P&IDs .
  • Experience in water or wastewater treatment systems and equipment manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with UL 508A panel construction, industrial wiring, or process piping.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing or process improvement practices.
  • Forklift certification or general shop equipment operation a plus.

Work Environment:

This position is based in a clean, temperature-controlled shop within a family-owned and operated company . You’ll lead a skilled and supportive team that values communication, craftsmanship, and efficiency. Our owners are flexible and understanding , offering support with scheduling and promoting a healthy work-life balance. While the position is primarily shop-based, occasional travel for project coordination or field support may be required but is not a routine responsibility.

Ohio Market Compensation Guidance:

For a small manufacturing operation (managing approximately five employees) in Ohio with full benefits provided:

  • Entry/Mid-Level Experience: $35–$38 per hour
  • Experienced / Strong Technical & Leadership Skills: $40–$45 per hour
  • Highly Experienced or Specialized Candidate: $45+ per hour
