Job Title:Process Improvement Consultant

Department:James | Operations Improvement

Scope of Position

As a Process Engineering Consultant within the Operational Excellence team at The James and OSUWMC, you will serve as a strategic driver of transformation across clinical care, research, and operational domains. This high-impact role is designed for a visionary leader with deep analytical expertise and the ability to influence change across a diverse and dynamic healthcare environment.

Operating in a non-patient care capacity, you will collaborate with stakeholders at all levels—from frontline staff to senior executives—to lead complex, multi-departmental initiatives that align with strategic initiatives and deliver measurable, sustainable results. From facilitating Rapid Improvement Events to mentoring future leaders in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies, this role will help shape a culture of continuous improvement.

Under the direction of the Manager, Process Improvement, the consultant leads efforts to ensure projects are delivered on time and with measurable improvement on the KPIs that support organizational goals. This position will focus on strategic project leadership, rapid improvement facilitation, mentorship and capability building, organizational representation and prioritization support.

This role requires strong collaboration across departments and may involve travel throughout the James and Ohio State University Medical Complex. While standard working hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., flexibility is expected to accommodate project-specific needs, such as early morning or evening stakeholder engagements. This position will work primarily onsite. The department of Operational Excellence is located at 660 Ackerman Building.

Position Summary

The Process Improvement Consultant will lead cross-functional teams through the full lifecycle of process improvement projects, ensuring timely execution and alignment with key performance indicators (KPIs) that support organizational goals across the mission areas of the Cancer Program and OSUWMC. This position will interface with our Business Operations team to calculate ROI on project work when warranted. Additionally, this position will identify and remove barriers that prevent successful attainment of process improvement goals. The Process Improvement Consultant will support the Manager of Process Improvement in project prioritization, resource allocation, and the development of educational programs that build process improvement capabilities across the organization. They may also represent the Process Improvement team on internal councils and committees, contributing thought leadership and strategic insight.

The candidate must be able to demonstrate exceptional problem solving and change management capabilities, advanced leadership and coaching skills, advance data analytic skills (operations research, statistical analysis to determine optimal and solution, etc.), and strong project management skills to successfully plan and implement a diverse portfolio of projects ranging from small rapid cycle projects to larger DMAIC initiatives.

Minimum Qualifications

  • For Hire: Education & Experience Master’s degree in Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field, with 6 years of progressive experience in performance and process improvement; or a Bachelors degree in industrial engineering or operations equivalent and at least 10 years of relevant experience. Proven expertise in Lean, Six Sigma, and DMAIC methodologies, including leading Rapid Improvement Events and Kaizen workshops. Demonstrated success in managing and sustaining major change initiatives with measurable outcomes. Strong background in project management, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive strategic initiatives across complex organizational structures.
  • Lean/Six Sigma certification highly preferred. Exceptional analytical, written, and verbal communication skills. Skilled in facilitating large, diverse stakeholder groups and navigating organizational dynamics.

Prior experience in healthcare settings is preferred, with an understanding of clinical and operational workflows. Demonstrates leadership skills and behaviors consistent with organizational values with the ability to influence the thinking of others.
