Department Summary
Bobcat Peer Educators foster a culture of care at Ohio University by promoting peer-to-peer well-being, encouraging bystander intervention, and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to make healthy decisions and look out for one another. Through collaboration with campus, community, and student organizations, Peer Educators use evidence-based strategies to address mental well-being, violence prevention, alcohol and other drug harm reduction, and sexual health.
Position Responsibilities:
- Model and promote a culture of care, encouraging peers to look out for one another and contribute to a healthier campus environment.
- Develop and implement health and well-being outreach initiatives that engage students in building skills related to mental well-being and suicide prevention, bystander intervention, alcohol and drug harm reduction, and sexual health education to foster healthy decision-making across their peers.
- Lead small group and community-based outreach efforts, including facilitating student workshops, programs, and interactive activities.
- Collect feedback and contribute to the evaluation of outreach efforts to assess impact and inform future programming.
- Collaborate with professional staff, graduate assistants, and interns to develop and deliver outreach strategies and health promotion campaigns, including creating messaging, marketing materials, and digital content for social media platforms (e.g., Instagram) to engage students and build skills in communication, education, and public health practice.
- Provide educational resources to students and connect peers to appropriate campus and community services based on their needs.
- Facilitate and support educational programming across a variety of settings, including classrooms, residence halls, and student organizations, while promoting Health Promotion resources.
- Complete all required orientation and ongoing training through the Office of Health Promotion, including the NASPA Certified Peer Educator program.
- Attend weekly meetings (60-90 minutes) focused on training, professional development, team bonding, and program planning.
- Support departmental initiatives and operations, including restocking Naloxone boxes, assisting with major events (e.g, Baker Bash, Party at Ping, Mental Health Resource Fair, Sexual Health Resource Fair) and contributing to departmental outreach efforts.
- Communicate professionally, respectfully, and in a timely manner with students, staff, and campus partners, while applying trauma-informed approaches to foster openness, trust, and honest peer-to-peer conversations.
- Serve as a mandated reporter by responsibly reporting disclosures involving risk of harm in accordance with university policy.
- Maintain appropriate boundaries and refer students to professional resources when needs extend beyond the peer educator role.
- Serve on university programming or prevention committees to contribute student perspectives and expand the reach of peer education and health promotion initiatives.
- Collaborate with other university peer educators to share best practices, exchange knowledge, and enhance training and well-being services available to students.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of the Office of Health Promotion.

Job Profile

Offers academic and/or well-being support to fellow students, helping them navigate academic, social, or personal challenges. Responsibilities may include providing peer counseling, resources, and referrals to other campus services.
Level Summary
Performs basic tasks and assists with administrative or operational duties under supervision. Roles are entry-level and aimed at providing exposure to workplace environments.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Limited supervisory responsibilities. May supervise other student workers.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
No budgetary responsibility.
Problem Solving:
Addresses routine, well-defined problems under supervision.
Independence of Action:
Works under close supervision.
Communication and Collaboration:
Communicates primarily with supervisor and peers. Collaborates with team members to accomplish tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled for classes at Ohio University, Hocking College, another post-secondary education institution, or a secondary school during the current semester, immediate previous semester, or immediate upcoming semester. Able to follow instructions and complete tasks within deadlines. Basic knowledge of office software and communication tools. Departments may have specific minimum requirements.

- Serve as a positive role model, demonstrating a committment to your personal well-being, the well-being of others, and having a passion for health empowerment and prevention.
- Self-motivated and proactive with the ability to engage peers in presentations, workshops, and tabling with a demonstrated confidence and skill in interpersonal communication.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to balance multiple responsibilities.
- Willingness and ability to commit to the role beyond the required two semesters.
- Experience with social media, peer leadership, or student engagement activities.
Working Condition/Physical Demands:
This role is primarily desk-based and involves extensive use of desktop computers. Occasionally, the job may require travel to attend meetings and programs.

Work Schedule
We will work with you and your academic classes to make your schedule. Bobcat Peer Educators traditionally work between 5-10 hours/week and sometimes work evenings or weekends as required.
