Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Duration: 16 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in specialty License: Valid state nursing license required Certifications: - Basic Life Support (BLS) - Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) Must-Have: - 2 years of PCU experience - Experience with patient ratios of 1:4 to 1:5 Description: This position involves working in a busy surgical oncology unit that cares for a mixed acuity of PCU and Med Surg patients. All permanent staff is trained in PCU. The unit is expected to have a daily census of approximately 36 patients. Patient age groups range from adults to geriatrics. Patients may present with various surgical oncology diagnoses, including breast, thyroid, melanoma, and colorectal cancers. Additional patient diagnoses may include hepatobiliary conditions, such as liver and pancreatic cancers. The role will include special procedures such as administering chemotherapy, blood transfusions, and IV antibiotics. Management of oncologic emergencies, insulin and heparin drips, as well as chest tube care will also be required. Staffing ratios are aimed at 1:4, but the flexibility of 1:5 is expected based on unit needs. Weekend coverage is variable based on the needs of the unit. There is no set or blocked scheduling. Self-scheduling requests are accepted. The first week of training will involve dayshift; the second week focuses on on-unit orientation with a preceptor. The unit emphasizes heavy infection prevention protocols and fall prevention strategies. Interdisciplinary support will include teams from IV therapy, physical therapy, respiratory services, and more. Candidates must meet the experience requirements within the last three years, with at least one year of current specialty experience. Experience with computerized charting systems, specifically Epic, is required. Professional references from management or a supervisory capacity are needed for verification.
