Transit System Dispatcher - Part Time
TRANSIT Dispatcher/Call Taker
The City of Wilmington is seeking a part-time Dispatcher within the Wilmington Transit System. Under direct supervision of the Director and Shift Leader, the Dispatcher schedules and dispatches drivers of service vehicles for conveyance of passengers. Duties include using two-way radio, telephone, or computer to transmit assignments and compiling statistics and reports on work progress.
This position is a safety-sensitive position requiring the inspection and maintenance of all vehicles on a regular basis to ensure the safe and lawful operation of the system fleet. Performance of these duties must be conducted in compliance with all applicable DOT, federal, state, local, and system regulations and policies, including U.S. DOT drug and alcohol testing regulations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Receives calls from customers and schedules or dispatches drivers and service vehicles to appropriate locations, according to customer requests, using two-way radios or telephones.
- Records and maintains log records of customer requests and drivers dispatched including call times, dispatch times, pick-up and drop-off locations and any pertinent remarks; receives monies from drivers, balances monies against daily receipts and driver’s logs, and secures monies in safe; maintains trip log of no-shows, trip denials, trip turndowns and trip refusals.
- Relays messages, or information to or from drivers, supervisors, or other field personnel, using telephones or two-way radios; advises drivers about traffic problems, such as construction areas, accidents, congestion, weather conditions, or other hazards; ensures timely and efficient movement of customers according to customer’s requests and dispatch schedules.
- Handles customer complaints and inquiries and refers unresolved to supervisor.
- Attends meetings and serves on committees, as directed; attends training and seminars, as directed.
- Meets all job safety requirements and all applicable OSHA safety standards that pertain to essential functions.
- Demonstrates regular and predictable attendance.

- Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED);
- Experience in office practices and procedures;
- One (1) year experience radio dispatching; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Must possess an Ohio Driver's License and maintain insurability (no more than four points).
The starting base salary will be consistent with the City's approved pay plan; this position's starting salary is $17.84 per hour; hourly rate of $19.62 including a shift differential of 10% beginning at 6 PM. Please note that this job will require weekend and evening hours.
