This is a hands-on leadership position that requires the manager to work alongside maintenance employees while planning repairs, coordinating preventive maintenance, managing parts and vendors, and ensuring equipment is available to support safe and efficient production.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Hands-On Maintenance and Repair

  • Perform and assist with troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment and industrial machinery.
  • Work directly alongside mechanics, technicians, and operations employees during equipment breakdowns, major repairs, and scheduled maintenance.
  • Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and diesel engine problems.
  • Perform or oversee repairs involving engines, transmissions, brakes, steering systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, welding, fabrication, and related components.
  • Respond to emergency equipment breakdowns and help restore equipment to service safely and efficiently.
Maintenance Leadership

  • Direct, supervise, train, and evaluate maintenance employees.
  • Assign daily work based on equipment condition, operational priorities, employee qualifications, and available resources.
  • Provide clear direction at the beginning of each shift and monitor the completion and quality of assigned work.
  • Hold maintenance employees accountable for safety, attendance, productivity, workmanship, housekeeping, and compliance with company policies.
Preventive Maintenance and Equipment Reliability

  • Develop, implement, and maintain preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
  • Ensure inspections, services, lubrication, and preventive maintenance tasks are completed on schedule.

  • Monitor equipment condition and recommend repairs, rebuilds, replacements, or capital improvements.
Safety and Compliance

  • Lead maintenance activities in accordance with SMS safety policies, customer requirements, OSHA regulations, and applicable environmental standards.
  • Conduct pre-job planning and ensure appropriate hazard assessments, lockout/tagout procedures, permits, and personal protective equipment are used.
  • Participate in safety meetings, audits, incident investigations, and corrective-action processes.
  • Ensure oils, fuels, batteries, tires, chemicals, and other materials are stored and disposed of properly.
Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience repairing heavy equipment, diesel equipment, industrial machinery, or similar equipment.
  • Prior experience leading mechanics, technicians, or maintenance employees.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, powertrains, brakes, steering, and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Basic computer skills, including email, work-order systems, spreadsheets, and maintenance records.
Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to:

  • Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in awkward positions.
