Tenure faculty (regardless of rank) - persons with the titles of professor, associate professor, assistant professor and instructor who serve on appointments totaling 50% or more service to the university and who are eligible for tenure or who have obtained tenure. Duties and responsibilities are assigned in accordance with the workload guidelines laid out in the pattern of administration of each faculty member’s tenure initiation unit (TIU) and, as appropriate, regional campus; obligations will include research, service and/or teaching or clinical practice. These faculty will have earned doctorate or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study or possession of equivalent experience.

The Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society

The Ohio State University’s motto, Disciplina in Civitatem, or “education for citizenship,” is not merely a slogan; it is an exhortation to remain focused on the responsibility to develop an informed, engaged, and civic-minded citizenry. It is essential to fulfilling Ohio State’s land-grant mission.

In 2023, the State of Ohio established and funded the Salmon P. Chase Center for Civics, Culture, and Society at Ohio State ("the Chase Center" or “Center”). The Chase Center is a multidisciplinary university center that conducts teaching, research, and public programming concerning the core texts and great debates of Western civilization; the principles, ideals, and institutions of the American and Ohio political order; and the foundations of responsible leadership and informed citizenship. It is an independent academic unit of the University. The Center is a leader of the growing cadre of similar schools of civic thought in Ohio and throughout the country.

During its first year of operation, the Chase Center laid a strong foundation for long-term success securing its mission to “conduct teaching and research in the historical ideas, traditions, and texts that have shaped the American constitutional order and society,” ORC

This upcoming year, the Center’s founding faculty will offer the Center’s first classes and degrees, the Center is hosting a robust suite of public programming, the Chase Society of students is large and growing, the Center launched its support for K-12 schools and their students, and the Center saw significant financial support from Ohio and private supporters. The Center will grow toward maturity over the next four years


Position Overview

The Chase Center is conducting a nationwide search for faculty of all ranks and disciplines. The Center seeks to fill several tenured faculty positions at the rank of Associate and Full Professor, as well as tenure-track Assistant Professor positions, to start in the 2026–2027 academic year. Successful candidates will be, or demonstrate the potential to be, extraordinary scholars with research and teaching in disciplines relevant to civic thought and leadership.

The Center is seeking extraordinary scholars of all disciplines, including especially candidates who will contribute to its three planned majors: Civics, Law & Leadership; Great Books; and Classical Education. Particular areas of interest include (but are not limited to): American constitutionalism/public law, natural law, English and Western literature, classical education, Ohio/Midwestern studies, political economy, civil leadership, and artificial intelligence and civics. The Center is also hiring established scholars of all disciplines who are leaders in their fields.

Successful candidates will have, or demonstrate the potential to have, an outstanding record of publishing research, teaching, and making contributions to their academic discipline in a manner that serves the Center’s mission and that is sufficient to obtain tenure in a top disciplinary department. Successful candidates will also have academic records that indicate they will be actively engaged in the Center’s and Ohio State’s intellectual life.

The Center’s faculty are public-spirited scholars who are committed to building an academic community in which civic life and the life of the mind flourish. As the heart of the Center’s academic community, faculty will advance the Center’s mission by making meaningful contributions to their academic disciplines, teaching and mentoring students, modeling collegiality, and serving the University and the broader Ohio community. Faculty, as with all members of the Center, should be familiar with and embrace the Center’s mission.

  • Contribute and demonstrate a commitment to the Chase Center’s statutory mission through research, teaching, and service.
  • Continue to build, or establish, a strong scholarly reputation in a discipline relevant to civic thought and leadership.
  • Publish high-quality and impactful scholarship in prestigious academic outlets in the Faculty member’s discipline, as well as other academic and popular outlets.
  • Develop and effectively teach courses that advance the Center’s mission.
  • Engage in service to the Chase Center, the University, and the broader community.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrate poise, professionalism, civility, and good judgment.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Hold, or be on track to complete before starting the position, a Ph.D., J.D., or other terminal degree in a field related to the Center’s mission.
  • Record or demonstrated promise of publishing high-quality and impactful scholarship in prestigious academic outlets in the faculty member’s discipline, as well as other academic and popular outlets.
  • Record or demonstrated promise of developing and effectively teaching courses that will advance the Center’s mission.


Desired

  • Relevant prior professional experience developing programming consistent with the Center’s mission, including (but not limited to) developing curriculum, activities that promote research productivity, academic community building, and activities that engage students and other community members.
