7:30am - 4:00pm

Reports to: Building Principal and Maintenance Supervisor

Job Objectives:

Performs custodial and routine maintenance duties to protect and preserve the school building grounds equipment and furnishings. Maintains high standards to ensure that a safe and orderly environment is maintained for educational and recreational activities. Uses each contact with the public as an opportunity to promote a positive impression of the school district.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Post-secondary technical/trade school graduate is preferred.
  • Meets all mandated health requirements (e.g. a negative tuberculosis test etc.).
  • Provides documented evidence of a clear criminal record.
  • School or closely related custodial experience is required.
  • Ability to be self-directed and takes the initiative to evaluate deficiencies set priorities organize and complete tasks independently.
  • Ability to comply with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Public Employer Risk Reduction Act (PERRA) regulations.
  • Knowledge of maintenance/custodial supplies and equipment.
  • Ability to perform minor electrical carpentry plumbing and mechanical repairs.
  • Ability to operate and perform routine maintenance on lawn and snow removal equipment.

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Performs building security checks as directed. Monitors the performance of equipment. Recognizes when problems may be developing. Immediately corrects or reports suspected malfunctions and unsafe conditions.
  • Checks daily to find out if a school activity requires preparation or clean up.
  • Performs regular inspections to ensure that custodial equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Maintains an inventory of essential custodial supplies. Anticipates needs and replenishes supplies to avoid interrupting the regular work schedule. Monitors and reports the effectiveness of custodial products.
  • Performs custodial and routine maintenance activities necessary to maintain safe and sanitary conditions. Establishes priorities. Enforces rules of good housekeeping. Provides for the regular and orderly removal of trash.
  • Completes assignments in-progress. Consults with the building principal and maintenance supervisor to resolve scheduling conflicts and to ensure a timely response to staff requests. Avoids disrupting building activities except during emergencies. Keeps current with required reports.
  • Keeps supervisors informed about work progress completed projects and emerging building issues.
  • Informs the office when working outside the building or leaving the grounds.
  • Sweeps mops strips and waxes floors. Vacuums and power cleans carpets. Cleans and sanitizes toilet rooms locker rooms and showers. Empties and sanitizes trash containers. Resupplies toilet paper feminine hygiene products towels and soap dispensers. Empties pencil sharpeners removes cobwebs cleans windows and mirrors. Washes chalkboards and trays. Dusts cleans and polishes furniture/woodwork.
  • Follows approved safety procedures to clean up accidents involving chemicals solvents blood body fluids and/or body tissues. Participates in occupational safety and health in-service training as directed.
  • Deals with unexpected situations (e.g. ill children spills broken glass etc.).
  • Makes minor repairs that do not unduly disrupt the routine work schedule (e.g. installs pencil sharpeners oils hinges cleans drains lubricates motors replaces fuses installs light bulbs removes graffiti touch-up painting simple repairs to floor machines and vacuums fixes loose screws and fittings on tables chairs and doors etc.).
  • Monitors and regulates the buildings heating and ventilating equipment.
  • Helps other custodians and/or maintenance staff address unexpected circumstances or pressing district needs as directed.
  • Helps with the receipt of deliveries. Unloads trucks. Inspects packages for damage. Verifies quantities. Organizes and stores supplies.
  • Cleans moves and arranges furnishings supplies and equipment as directed.
  • Anticipates and is prepared for fire health and safety inspections. Maintains clean safe and orderly work areas. Maintains clear routes to public exits to ensure the safe evacuation of the building. Escorts inspectors on tours as directed.
  • Complies with MSDS AHERA EPA OSHA PERRA regulations. Ensures that custodial supplies are labeled and safely stored.
  • Helps coach new and temporary employees in procedures to effectively accomplish their duties and the proper precautions to prevent injuries.
  • Immediately reports all accidents. Follows prescribed first aid policies and procedures. Promptly documents all accidents and injuries that require a medical referral. Implements recommended preventive safety measures.
  • Removes snow ice and debris along sidewalks to public entrances.
  • Picks up and delivers equipment materials and other supplies as directed.
  • Immediately reports all traffic citations incurred during the performance of assigned duties to the building principal and maintenance supervisor.
  • Learns operating and maintenance procedures for all custodial equipment. Keeps current with advances in equipment technology. Shares knowledge and skills with appropriate staff.
  • Helps prepare and maintain equipment inventories as directed.
  • Recommends procedures and equipment that enhance safety contribute to effective building operations improve productivity and conserve district resources.
  • Monitors and reports safety concerns (e.g. missing fire extinguishers burnt out exit lights defective doors and panic bars damaged electrical outlets etc.).
  • Acts responsibly to protect district equipment and property. Takes appropriate action during emergencies and/or adverse weather conditions (e.g. closes windows resets fire alarms secures the building turns off utility services etc.).
  • Helps with the management of building security. Refers visitors to the principals office. Reports trespassers. Turns off lights and close windows. Ensures that the building and work areas are properly secured at the end of the work day.
  • Opens monitors protects and closes the building for district-sponsored or authorized community group activities as directed.
  • Makes reasonable provisions to respond to building emergencies at any hour when requested by the superintendent building principal or maintenance supervisor.
  • Strives to develop rapport with students staff parents and the public.
  • Responds to requests and complaints promptly and tactfully.
  • Offers and accepts constructive suggestions diplomatically.
  • Respects the personal confidences and privacy needs of individuals.
  • Reports student discipline problems vandalism or other related concerns to the building principal and/or maintenance supervisor.
  • Reports evidence of suspected child abuse as required by law.
  • Promotes a positive image of the custodial department. Maintains a clean neat appearance and wears appropriate work attire.
  • Participates in staff meetings and professional growth activities as directed.
  • Serves as a role model for students. Demonstrates personal integrity responsibility impartiality respect and courtesy.
  • Performs other specific job-related duties as directed.

  • Climbs and works from a ladder scaffold platform or other equipment that requires balancing skills.
  • Works in confined spaces such as a crawl space catwalk or other areas that limit movement.
  • Performs activities that require stooping kneeling and/or crouching.
  • Discerns sound variances in equipment.
  • Maintains an acceptable attendance record and is punctual.

Supervisory Responsibility:

Under the direction of the building principal and/or maintenance supervisor:provides instructions and communicates expectations to assigned substitutes seasonal/temporary employees and job trainees.

Working Conditions:

Exposure to the following conditions may range from remote to frequent based on circumstances and factors that may not be predictable.

  • Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
  • Interaction with disruptive and/or unruly individuals.
