Envision Academy Intervention Specialist/Teacher (grades 8-12)

SUMMARY : The primary function of the Intervention Specialist is to plan and implement goals and objectives, curricula, and management programs for students with disabilities. The intervention Specialist will work as part of a team on behalf of the students with regular classroom teachers, administrators and staff to ensure the students with disabilities are educated in the least restrictive environment possible. He/she provides, within the classroom, educational program for the students and may assist in other programs within Christian Children's Home of Ohio.

Job-specific essential functions include the following:

  • Makes every effort to maintain a 'team first' spirit and atmosphere within the workplace environment – fostering and maintaining appropriate working relationships within the Envision Academy/Children's Residential Center team, and with other Agency departments, as well.
  • Complies with the Operating Standards for Ohio's Schools Serving Children with Disabilities, regarding placement, instruction, and evaluation of students with disabilities.
  • Establishes an effective instructional program for students with disabilities that is aligned with the Ohio Academic Content Standards.
  • Prepares daily lesson plans, plan strategies, and activities to meet identified needs of students, implements student individual education plan (IEP).
  • Assesses students with appropriate diagnostic instruments; evaluates student's progress through the utilization of established procedures.
  • Administers standardized achievement tests; evaluate, interpret, and apply results from standardized achievement tests; administer alternative assessments when appropriate.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain an effective classroom management system; provides for special behavioral needs of individual students by developing behavior management plans; and documents/reports all significant behavior concerns.
  • Participates in IEP meetings and IEP development; write goals and objectives for students entering the program
  • Participates in completing Evaluation Team Reports (ETRs).
  • Participates in Intervention Assistance Team meetings on request.
  • Attends staffing & placement meetings for students eligible for special education services.
  • Acts as resource person for classroom teachers regarding strategies, adaptations, and resource materials.
  • Provides direction and guidance to instructional assistants through the discussion of established procedures, development of a daily schedule, and coordinated implementation of program goals and objectives.
  • Utilizes the resources provided to improve the quality of instruction.
  • Prepares classrooms for learning activities; provides a variety of materials and resources to promote student learning.
  • Maintains a safe and attractive learning environment; reports any safety concerns to Program Manager.
  • Participates with all specialists to develop an appropriate, effective transdisciplinary approach to meet the individual needs of the students.
  • Maintains accurate and complete student records; prepares and submits required reports.
  • Collects data to evaluate the effectiveness of the program, makes recommendations to the supervisor for program improvements.
  • Seeks opportunities to improve skills and grow professionally; attends all required meetings and in-services.
  • Takes reasonable precautions to protect the students, self and the classroom environment.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records.
  • Makes provisions to be available to students, staff, and administration for education-related purposes before/after the school day when requested to do so.
  • Attends staff meetings, gives feedback week for Weekly Program Reviews, and responds to appropriate emails.
  • Listens to and communicates skillfully with students, staff, and leadership.
  • Supports the purpose of the school through/with other staff members and maintains a high expectation of students, oneself, and other professionals.
  • Encourages and supports learning by displaying a reinforcing personality including empathy, humor, and consistency.
  • Promotes cooperation and team effort through shared successes.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Classroom activities and students.

REQUIRED SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Working understanding of education terminology and necessary requirements to fulfill specific education duties. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret education documents such as transcripts, IEPs, and testing requirements. Ability to write, evaluate and teach curriculum.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Must be able to communicate well with colleagues, verbally/in writing to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to apply common sense. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables.
  • Competency with a personal computer, and familiarity with Outlook, Teams, Word, and Excel
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced environment, as well as cope and tolerate high levels of stress.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

  • Bachelor's degree in education or related field from an accredited institution. Middle school/High School credentials strongly preferred.
  • Must maintain proper certification in teaching area/active Ohio teaching license.
  • Intervention Specialist credentials required.
  • Classroom teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with children from hard places strongly preferred, especially in classroom setting.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Frequently required to walk, sit, talk, and hear, including a requirement to stand or walk for extended periods of time, sometimes through uneven terrain.
  • Often required to use hands/fingers, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly able to lift/move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to be outdoors in various weather conditions for extended amounts of time.

  • Must be able to drive a vehicle legally and safely in the state of Ohio.
  • Must maintain compliance/certification with Safe Harbor's requirements for using physical restraints (SCM: Safe Crisis Management), including sufficient strength and completion of extensive training. Physical ability to respond to crisis, including, but not limited to running and performing physical restraints.

CONTINUOUS QUALITY IMPROVEMENT (CQI): All Safe Harbor staff are expected to focus on Quality improvement as a part of their job responsibilities, in an effort to make the Agency a safe and healing environment for clients and staff. This expectation includes, but is not limited to teamwork, improving service delivery, fulfilling department goals, and other job-specific tasks that encourage excellence.
