Environmental Specialist, Lead
Job Summary
What happens when environmental compliance meets complex operations, strict regulations, and a mission that matters? That’s where you come in. As the Environmental Specialist Lead, you’ll serve as a technical leader and go-to resource for environmental and waste management at Centrus. You’ll help shape compliance programs, guide environmental specialists, partner with operations across the site, and serve as a key interface with agencies including the NRC, DOE, EPA, and other regulatory organizations. This is the highest level in our professional environmental career path, offering the opportunity to tackle complex challenges, influence how work gets done, and help ensure Centrus continues to operate safely, responsibly, and in compliance with evolving environmental requirements.
What You Will Do
Lead the day-to-day environmental and waste management function by providing technical guidance, mentoring Environmental Specialists, overseeing compliance initiatives, and partnering with cross-functional teams on complex projects. You’ll monitor and resolve environmental issues, support audits and regulatory interactions, respond to spills and releases, track corrective actions and performance metrics, and help translate changing regulations into practical solutions for the business. You’ll also support resource planning, contractor oversight, compliance training, and special projects while providing management with clear updates on risks, costs, schedules, and regulatory requirements—and step in for the Environmental and Waste Programs Manager when delegated.
We’d Love to Hear from People With
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or the physical sciences, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 3+ years of experience in environmental and/or waste management
- Advanced knowledge of environmental and waste management systems and applicable state and federal requirements
- Detailed knowledge of environmental and waste regulations, including EPA, DOT, and NRC requirements
- Working knowledge of Centrus, DOE, or NRC procedures, practices, policies, and requirements
- Ability to obtain and maintain a “Q” Clearance
A Successful Candidate Brings
- Strong technical expertise in environmental compliance and waste management
- Experience working with regulatory agencies and supporting environmental audits
- The ability to manage multiple priorities while keeping projects, corrective actions, and regulatory commitments on track
- A continuous-learning mindset and the curiosity to stay ahead of evolving environmental regulations and requirements
- Currently holding an active Q-level security clearance
