POSITION:
The primary function of this position is to provide advanced ASL/English interpreting and transliterating services for the Office of the President and to ensure interpreting services are provided for all meetings, conferences, and events that the President attends. Also, this position monitors the quality of contracted interpreter services.
The role of a designated interpreter is unique. The position requires a nuanced understanding of functions, boundaries, relationships, and communication & power dynamics. The selected interpreter becomes a representative of the President’s Office and become fully integrated into the Antioch College work environment.
Successful integration requires developing an understanding of the President’s role and goals, the leadership team and community dynamics and the College’s vision, mission and core values. This position will interact with trustees, students, administrators, faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors, potential students and external constituents as an extension of the President’s Office. The primary focus of this position is to provide interpreting services to enable two-way communication among and between groups mentioned above and the President. The position will require interpreting in diverse settings, such as but not limited to, one-on-one meetings, group meetings, social events, meetings conducted over meals, conferences, and Board of Trustees’ meetings; both in person and virtually. The designated interpreter must have the ability to serve as a professional within these environments and make quick decisions on the function of the event, appropriate interactions, placement, logistics, and relationship building.
A majority of the interpreting is English-to-ASL. The position requires someone who can stay present and engaged and who can remain in the role of an interpreter for extended periods of time. The person in the post should be someone who can self-monitor effectiveness of their work and consult professionally with a mentor/advisor, as needed. Interpretations should reflect the broad range of communication styles and personalities of all parties involved and reflect the linguistic nuances of academia, higher education, and professional environments. The interpreter must be able to work within the continuum of registers, especially formal and intimate, and manage communication as efficiently and effectively as possible.
This position is also directly responsible for ensuring all events and meetings attended by the President have an interpreter or a team of interpreters, as needed. The person in this position must have the ability to assess communication needs with respect for the parties involved, function/goal of the event and relationships to best coordinate interpreting services. Communication with outside organizations regarding the provision of interpreting services may be required. This position requires someone who can work professionally with other interpreters, actively monitoring and supporting their interpreting by briefing and debriefing critical information and ensuring the accurate and adequate provision of interpreting services.
This position requires a commitment to the College, loyalty to the President, unquestioned integrity, a keen sense of confidentiality, a professional manner, demonstrated skills in effectively managing challenging situations, ethical decision-making, and excellent judgment. The person in this position should possess an understanding of their hearing privilege, and the trusted responsibility to appropriately and ethically sharing incidental learning and to interpret environmental information.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform highly advanced interpreting utilizing comprehensive and specialized skills with knowledge and practice of interpreter ethics.
- Provide ASL/English interpreting and transliterating.
- Work within a continuum of registers, especially intimate and formal.
- Interpret highly technical and environment-specific content.
- Ability to work without the assistance of another interpreter at times if the demands of the work require it.
- Prepare for understanding by staying abreast of College initiatives and team/community projects, goals and dialogs; stay current with communications among the team; and research topics pertinent to College business.
- Prepare for meetings by familiarizing oneself with meeting agendas and other content.
- Strictly adhere to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc.’s Code of Professional Conduct with emphasis on confidentiality and professionalism.
- Advise and make decisions regarding set-up, placement, and logistics of the interpreter(s) to ensure effective communication on the dynamics of the team/individuals involved.
- Coordinate all aspects of interpreting services needed for any events and meetings attended by the President including in-state, out-of-state, and international travel for conferences and meetings.
- Carefully monitor the quality of contracted interpreter services to ensure effective communication.
- Process invoices for contracted interpreting services.
- Provide mentoring and consultation to contracted interpreters to ensure effective communication.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Direct experience working in the role of a designated interpreter or as a staff interpreter.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Interpreting from an accredited institution.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
- Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf-National Association for the Deaf Certification or equivalent state administered credential.

- Movement within and across an historic residential campus.
- Adept keyboarding, use of Google mail and Google docs, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation technology.
- Sitting, standing, walking.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Position works extensively in an office environment; seated for up to two hours at a time
- General office/classroom/meeting environments and residential settings in a higher education institution in a semi-rural residential campus environment.
- Requirement to move around campus, indoors and outdoors, over paved and rough terrain in all weather
