About the Role:
The Operations Manager - Landfills is responsible for overseeing the daily operations and long-term management of landfill sites to ensure environmental compliance, operational efficiency, and safety. This role involves coordinating with regulatory agencies, managing staff, and implementing best practices for waste disposal and site maintenance. The manager will develop and enforce operational policies that align with federal, state, and local regulations while optimizing resource utilization and cost control. A key outcome of this position is to maintain landfill operations that minimize environmental impact and promote sustainability initiatives. The Operations Manager will also lead continuous improvement efforts to enhance site performance and community relations.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in landfill operations or solid waste management.
- Strong knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations governing landfill operations.
- Proven experience managing teams and operational budgets.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to multiple landfill sites as needed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional certification such as Certified Landfill Manager (CLM) or Registered Environmental Manager (REM).
- Experience with landfill gas management and leachate treatment systems.
- Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and environmental monitoring software.
- Advanced degree in Environmental Management or related discipline.
- Demonstrated success in implementing sustainability initiatives within landfill operations.
Responsibilities:
- Manage and supervise all landfill operations, including waste receipt, compaction, cover application, and leachate management.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental regulations and permits related to landfill operations.
- Develop and implement operational procedures and safety protocols to protect employees and the environment.
- Coordinate with environmental agencies, contractors, and community stakeholders to address concerns and maintain positive relationships.
- Monitor operational budgets, prepare reports, and analyze performance metrics to drive efficiency and cost savings.
- Lead and train a team of landfill staff, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Oversee maintenance of landfill equipment and infrastructure to ensure reliable and safe operation.
- Implement and manage environmental monitoring programs, including groundwater and gas monitoring.
- Plan and execute landfill expansion or closure activities in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Skills:
The Operations Manager will utilize strong leadership and communication skills daily to manage teams and coordinate with regulatory bodies effectively. Analytical skills are essential for interpreting environmental data, monitoring compliance, and optimizing operational processes. Technical knowledge of landfill systems and environmental regulations will guide decision-making and ensure safe, compliant operations. Budget management and strategic planning skills will be applied to allocate resources efficiently and plan for future site needs. Additionally, problem-solving abilities will be critical in addressing operational challenges and implementing continuous improvement initiatives.
