Electronic Systems Technical Specialist - Tools

Cummins Inc.
Columbus, OH

We are looking for a talented Electronic Systems Technical Specialist – Tools to join our team specializing in engineering for our Cummins’ business in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Investigate and resolve electronic tools issues end‑to‑end by identifying root causes, recommending corrective actions, owning resolution, and clearly documenting outcomes while leveraging guidance when needed.

Improve the effectiveness and reliability of electronic tools by applying and enhancing standard development processes such as ETPL workflows, 7‑step problem solving, and application product development lifecycle practices.

Deliver high‑quality, verified software features, components, and builds by collaborating and negotiating with product and software development teams to meet user and business needs.

Make sound technical decisions in software architecture, requirements, design, and testing that positively influence product quality, scalability, and feature performance.

Ensure robust, reusable, and efficient designs by reviewing and providing constructive feedback on the work of less‑experienced developers and testers.

Lead smaller projects or take ownership of complex components or systems, operating independently with full accountability while navigating ambiguity and evolving requirements.

Drive continuous improvement across the function by leading enhancements to tools, processes, and systems, and by coordinating work among technicians, student employees, and junior engineers.

Serve as a trusted technical specialist within the team by providing guidance on technical direction, sharing knowledge, and continuously building proficiency in critical technology and competency areas.

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Apply strong systems and requirements discipline by translating stakeholder needs into clear, traceable, and verifiable system requirements, managing changes across the lifecycle, and using systems thinking to define scope, interfaces, risks, and trade‑offs.

Design and validate high‑quality software and platforms by building reliable PC/mobile tools, developing balanced and scalable product architectures, and leading verification and validation activities to ensure solutions meet capability, quality, and future market needs.

Make sound decisions in complex environments by synthesizing large amounts of technical and business information, assessing alternatives through data‑driven analysis, managing risk, and delivering results under ambiguity and time pressure.

Collaborate, communicate, and influence effectively by building strong internal and external networks, tailoring communications to diverse audiences, valuing different perspectives, and resourcefully aligning people and resources to move initiatives forward.

Education/Experience:

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required. Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

Additional Details:

Responsibilities

  • Execute user acceptance testing (UAT) on incoming software builds to validate requirements, usability, and quality.
  • Provision and maintain ADT bench test environments (hardware, software, harnessing/adapters), coordinating with external stakeholders to resolve hardware and controls-software dependencies across planning, development, and test phases.
  • Participate in Agile/Scrum ceremonies to track quality risks, communicate status, and keep delivery on schedule.
  • Manage issue resolution of reported problems with the Service Tool and develop/expand training for Cummins Care digital support.

Qualifications (Required)

  • Working knowledge of battery-electric vehicle (BEV) diagnostics fundamentals, including common features and diagnostic communication protocols.
  • Proficiency with engineering collaboration tools (e.g., JIRA, Git, Confluence) to track work, manage changes, and document test results.
  • Baseline understanding of service tester hardware and interfaces (ECUs, datalink adapters, bench harnessing) sufficient to support bench and on-vehicle testing.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • Hands-on experience executing manual and/or automated test cases for vehicle diagnostic service tester tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead or coordinate remote and on-site vehicle test execution across multiple stakeholders.
  • Familiarity with Cummins-specific processes, tool chains, and ways of working (e.g., standard workflows, release practices, internal documentation norms).
  • Deeper ECU-level hardware/software expertise (e.g., interfaces, flashing/configuration concepts, network communication) to troubleshoot complex test and diagnostic issues.
