The Store Design Manager will lead a team of designers and external architectural consultants in the design implementation of more than 140 projects per annum in North America. They will work directly with the Leadership team and Key Stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle from pre-deal scoping through store opening to ensure timing, budget, design, and operational requirements are met. This person will draw on the collaboration and support of their Peer Managers in the greater store design team who implement stores worldwide and maintain the kit-of-parts, A&E program, and create new concepts. A demonstrated multi-year background in scaled program implementation, project management, and talent development is critical to this role.
Responsibilities
Project Management and Planning
- Collaborate with Construction, Finance, and Real Estate on the scope and budget development that informs the deal approval of each store project. Raise atypical considerations to Design Leadership for alignment.
- Influence Construction, Project Delivery, and Real Estate on project timelines to enable a balanced workload while meeting effective open dates and lease agreements. Assign projects to Designers and Architects.
- Partners with fellow Design Managers, Leadership, and Cross-functions to support the planning, design, and implementation of special projects and master program initiatives.
- Own project attribute tracking, project changes, and monitor system documentation to ensure accurate reporting of projects and timelines; proactively communicate to business owners and leadership.
- Support the management of parts inventory by regularly communicating project changes to strategic sourcing and partnering with them to inform their monthly buys, and by coordinating slow-moving inventory with projects.
- Supports, and collaborates with Design Director(s) and Peers on Leadership reviews, and Executive presentations. Will follow up with deliverables and prepare portions of the presentations.
Project Implementation
- Is responsible for the project design and quality control of all projects.
- Drives project team meetings and cross-functional plan reviews with Store Operations, Visual Operations, Asset Protection, Logistics, Construction, and Sourcing. Proactively track, communicate, and follow up with deliverables.
- Guides designers in translating design and merchandise standards in the store layouts, storefront design, project-related shop drawings, and troubleshooting during projects.
- Supervise workload and performance expectations of the external Architects and their engineers in the QC of construction documentation, and review/approve project RFPs and CRFs. Partner with this resource for schematic design when required. Support Architect and Finance in PO closeouts.
- Partners with Peers to inform global development and master program scope(s), and fully implement changes as defined by the program.
Talent Development and Supervision
- Actively understand designers' strengths and areas of interest to aid in work assignments and collaborative opportunities that further their growth and development while improving the team's performance in fulfilling business objectives.
- Consistently provide real-time constructive feedback, coaching, and guidance to direct reports to support professional growth.
- Self-advocate for your development with your manager, and others by actively talking about your strengths, seeking feedback, and identifying where your strengths may support business goals.
- Maintain records of your direct report's development and achievements and conduct quarterly HR-guided performance conversations.
- Partner with the Design Leadership team to meet business goals, calibrate talent, and raise workload needs.
Qualifications
- Progressive experience in leading design and architectural implementation programs for retail, restaurant, or hospitality chains.
- Measurable experience and enthusiasm for developing talent and motivating a team to achieve objectives.
- Advanced use of AutoCAD, Adobe InDesign, and Microsoft suite programs. Sketchup knowledge is helpful for team coaching.
- Knowledgeable of building/life safety codes, and Americans with Disability Act in the U.S., Canada, and its Provinces.
Education
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) in Architecture, Interior Design, or related field
- Demonstrated continuing education as relates to the design, implementation, and leadership
