Cable and Line Utilityworker
Definition
This is semi-skilled work in support of the City of Akron traffic signal or line and cable communication systems.
An employee in this class assists skilled workers in performing various installation, maintenance, and repair tasks in the overhead and underground wire systems used in the City's traffic signal system, or in the installation, maintenance, and repair of the City's line and cable communication system.
Works under the supervision of more skilled workers or foreman. Assignments may be hazardous and performed under adverse weather conditions.
Characteristic Work
Assists skilled workers in installing and removing overhead and underground wire, cable and fiber optics. Loads and unloads equipment and tools including cables, signals, wires, etc. Manually digs holes and ditches to install laterals, hand holes, and ducts. Helps install various signal or communication equipment such as fire alarm boxes, traffic lights, flashers, wood or steel poles, mast arms, towers, terminal boxes, audio and video systems, security alarms, and telephone systems. Assists in installing conduit, circuit breakers, and other electrical equipment on City property. Prepares pipe and electrical conduit for use in various projects. Sets up traffic cones and barricades around work sites. Helps tighten overhead wires and trims trees which interfere with overhead equipment. Climbs poles and towers as necessary. Operates a bucket truck and line truck and specialized equipment on each vehicle. Responds to emergency calls, both during and outside normal working hours, to assist in the repair of signal or communications equipment. Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
A minimum of one year of paid experience in work involving the installation, repair, and maintenance of traffic signal or line and cable communication systems. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.
Some knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, practices, hazards, and safety precautions associated with the maintenance, repair, and installation of traffic signal or line and cable communications systems.
Mechanical aptitude. Sufficient physical strength and stamina to work under adverse weather conditions and to perform any of the duties of this classification below ground or at various heights above ground. Ability to differentiate between or match colors, including shades of color and brightness. Ability to respond to emergency calls. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Competitive Examination Process
This is a classified position.
The selection process will consist of a competitive examination with credit for experience. A passing score must be obtained on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 90%, Experience 10%.
Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.
NOTE: The competitive examination may be suspended if shown to be impractical because of an insufficient number of qualified candidates. The candidates will then be ranked in a standard manner based on 90% for qualifying and 10% for experience.
RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.
VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to their passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.
DRIVER S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
