Part-time Staff: Experiential Learning Specialist (Grant Funded)

Lakeland Community   College, serving approximately 6,000 students annually and located 25 miles east of Cleveland, Ohio, invites applications for this grant-funded (through June 2027), part-time staff position. Under the direct supervision of the Director of Career Services, the Experiential Learning Specialist will be responsible for assisting with the development, delivery and oversight of a comprehensive experiential learning program for students enrolled in Associate of Arts and/or Associate of Science programs of study who intend to transfer into baccalaureate degree programs within behavioral health services career communities. Experiential learning will include internship program participation, job shadowing, career coaching/mentorship, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES  (representative)

  • Assist with the development and implementation of a targeted marketing and recruitment campaign to communicate and promote the value for students enrolled in either Associate of Arts and/or Associate of Science degree tracks to participate in paid, experiential learning experiences at assigned, approved sites. Work in conjunction with the Director for Career Services and other college departments (e.g., marketing, counseling, and advising) to create effective messaging and identify effective means of communicating with students (e.g., social media, etc.).
  • Assist with recruiting and engaging eligible candidates for participation in this experiential learning program. Organize or attend college events, prepare, and provide information to campus constituents (e.g., the Learning Center, the Transfer Center, faculty, student organizations, etc.) to share with students, provide information to Counseling and Advising Center, Transfer Center, Learning Center, Student Engagement and Leadership Office and faculty. Develop and deliver group presentations regarding the experiential learning program both within the college and the community.
  • Meet with students to discuss their interest and eligibility in participating in this program. Provide information about various specific opportunities and how these might align with the students' career goals.
  • Coach program participants via individualized and group sessions implementing and delivering a required series of workshops, five weeks in length surveying careers in the behavioral health services industry and focused on career development and awareness.
  • Provide guidance for on-the-job challenges and opportunities. Maintain regular contact with program participants and host site supervisors staying abreast of student's progress and providing or recommending additional resources as needed.
  • Assist with the development and communication with business contacts to engage and motivate employers to provide experiential learning opportunities and participate in Lakeland career events. Assist the Director of Career Services with training employers in the development of their company's experiential learning program, appropriate manner of engaging with students, and ethical and procedural guidelines for experiential learning. Review suitability of companies and/or their posted opportunities. Alert Director of Career Services to potential issues.
  • Create and maintain detailed databases of students' documentation, records, and activities. Track progress, enrollments, hires, etc., and generate reports. Analyze quantitative and qualitative data and use for continuous improvement.
  • Develop, coordinate and/or assist the Career Services team with projects and events. Represent Career Services and the college for internal, community, and state-wide initiatives and professional endeavors.
  • Stay up to date on employment and industry trends, co-op/internship ethics and laws, student, and employer needs, college programs, resources, and technology.

QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education/Training and Experience Required/Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in business, human resources, communications, counseling, adult education, psychology, sociology, or a related area.
  • Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience assisting students/customers of a wide range of demographics such as age, socio-economic status, etc.
  • Knowledge of effective job search strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills and experience.
  • Proficient with technology including Internet research, online job boards, job search tools/software, MS Office.
  • Experience with one-on-one tutoring or coaching others.

B. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the nature and role of community college career services centers and experiential learning programs.
  • Knowledge of local employers, employment outlooks, employment trends, and general practices and laws related to employment.
  • Experience developing marketing and promotional materials and coordinating programs or events. Experience establishing and maintaining spreadsheets and/or databases.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and interact with students via virtual platforms such as Teams, Webex, and social media sources.
  • Possess skills related to public speaking and preparing oral and written communications. Organizational and recordkeeping skills using modern office software and equipment.
  • Ability to identify and evaluate the needs of the target audience. Ability to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity while coaching students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective interpersonal working relationships Ability to work independently and as a team member.

C. Physical Activity Level

  • Light - Sit sometimes, walk and stand sometimes, lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • This is a part-time, non-continuing, grant-funded (through June 2027) staff position, averaging 25 hours per week, Monday through Thursday or Friday, daytime.
  • The starting hourly rate for this position is $25.75/hour with non-insurance benefits, including paid time away (vacation, personal, sick and holiday pay) and prorated tuition.
