Job Description:
The Special Collections and Instruction Librarian, an administrative staff position with non-tenure track Assistant Professor faculty status, combines expertise in archives and special collections management with active participation in the broader educational mission through library instruction, reference services, and liaison responsibilities. They will lead the implementation and administration of Alma Digital. They also work closely with Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement, Athletics, University Communications, and other campus departments, as well as external partners such as the Heritage Center and Clark County Public Library. This is a full-time, exempt-level position reporting to the Director of the Thomas Library.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Special Collections and Archives
- Manage, organize, and provide access to the university's special collections, archives, and rare materials
- Develop and implement preservation strategies for historical documents, photographs, manuscripts, and artifacts
- Lead the implementation and administration of Alma Digital which has the potential to include open scholarship and digital collections
- Create and maintain finding aids and digital collections using appropriate metadata standards
- Hire and supervise student employees for archival and/or digital collections work
- Conduct research and provide specialized reference assistance for special collections materials
- Support efforts from campus departments such as the Philanthropy & Alumni Engagement, Athletics, and University Communications requiring archival connections
- Collaborate with faculty, students, and external researchers on projects utilizing archival materials
- Plan and execute exhibitions and programming to promote special collections
- Ensure compliance with copyright, privacy, and ethical standards in archival practice
Instruction and Research Services
- Provide general and specialized research consultations and support to students, faculty, and community members by appointment
- Develop, deliver, and assess information literacy instruction sessions
- Create and maintain instructional materials and research guides
- Contribute to online and chat reference services
Liaison and Outreach
- Serve as library liaison to assigned academic departments, promoting library resources and services within liaison departments
- Collaborate with faculty on curriculum support and research needs assessment
- Make recommendations for collection enhancement and participate in collection assessment and deselection projects
- Collaborate with community partners, such as the Heritage Center and Clark County Public Library
- Serve and actively contribute to relevant committees, task forces, and working groups at the Library, University, regional, and/or national level
Perform other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.
Requirements:
Requirements include:
- A master's degree in library science or equivalent (MSLS, MLIS, MALS etc.) from a library school program accredited by the American Library Association or other relevant advanced degree is required by start of appointment.
- One to three years' relevant work experience.
- Certificate or educational concentration in archives preferred.
- Knowledge of archival principles, practices, and standards (DACS, EAD, Dublin Core).
- One or more years experience with special collections or archival processing and preservation practices (graduate-level experience accepted).
- Demonstrated ability to provide research consultation services and library instruction.
- Ability to perform physical activities associated with the archival environment.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to promote and contribute to an inclusive and welcoming educational and work environment.
- Experience supervising the work of student employees preferred.
- Experience with digital collections and archival collection management software preferred.
- Familiarity with copyright and fair use in academic settings preferred.
- Competency and experience using Microsoft Office software, specifically proficient in the use of Excel, Publisher, Outlook, and PowerPoint with the ability and desire to learn additional software applications as necessary.
- Ability to reach for books on shelves, to lift and move books, materials, or equipment, often up to 25-30 pounds.
- Ability to sit at a computer workstation for more than 50% of workday and perform repetitive motions, such as typing or using a computer mouse.
- Evening and weekend work is occasionally required.
