Summary:

The Biomedical Equipment Technician (BMET) is responsible for the maintenance, calibration, testing, and repair of all medical and surgical equipment used throughout the surgery center. This fully onsite role ensures that all biomedical devices function reliably, comply with regulatory standards, and support clinical staff in delivering safe and effective patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and calibration of biomedical equipment, including surgical instruments, monitors, anesthesia machines, infusion pumps, defibrillators, and diagnostic devices.

  • Troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning medical equipment, identifying root causes and implementing corrective actions.

  • Test and document equipment performance, adhering to manufacturer specifications and safety guidelines.

  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance activities, calibration logs, repairs, and inventory.

  • Coordinate with clinical staff to schedule maintenance and minimize equipment downtime.

  • Evaluate new or replacement biomedical devices; assist with installation, verification, and user training as needed.

  • Ensure all biomedical equipment meets national safety standards, hospital policies, and accreditation requirements.

  • Provide technical support during surgical procedures to address equipment issues quickly.

  • Monitor and manage spare parts inventory, ordering components as needed to support maintenance operations.

  • Work with external vendors and service providers for major repairs, warranty claims, and equipment upgrades.

  • Train clinical staff on the proper use, inspection, and preventive care of medical devices.

  • Assist with budgeting for equipment maintenance, repair, and replacement.

  • Participate in safety and quality improvement initiatives related to biomedical systems.

  • Maintain compliance with regulatory guidelines, reporting any equipment incidents or non-conformance issues promptly.

Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical diploma in biomedical technology, electronic technology, biomedical engineering, or related field; equivalent work experience may be considered.

  • 2+ years of experience working as a biomedical technician or biomedical equipment technician, preferably in a hospital, surgical center, or clinical setting.

  • Strong technical skills in electronics, digital systems, and mechanical repair.

  • Knowledge of biomedical equipment, including but not limited to infusion pumps, ventilators, surgical monitors, and anesthesia equipment.

  • Familiarity with calibration procedures, preventive maintenance, and safety testing standards.

  • Good documentation skills and ability to maintain organized maintenance records.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with clinical and administrative teams.

  • Ability to train others on proper equipment usage and safety.

  • Understanding of regulatory requirements and standards (e.g., Joint Commission, FDA recommendations, etc.).

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation, if occasional offsite visits are required.

  • Commitment to maintaining high standards of professionalism and patient safety.

Work Environment & Conditions

  • Fully onsite role within the surgery center, including operating rooms, recovery areas, and clinical departments.

  • Exposure to surgical areas, clinical environments, and clean zones.

  • Work involves handling electronic and mechanical equipment, tools, and testing instruments.

  • May require lifting moderately heavy equipment or parts.

  • Requires adherence to sterile conditions, infection control protocols, and safety guidelines.

  • On-call or flexible hours may be required to address urgent equipment failures or maintenance needs.

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) may be required in clinical areas.
