Job Description

Under general supervision from groundskeeper supervisor or other higher-level supervisor, performs semi-skilled & skilled grounds maintenance functions; landscapes grounds; maintains athletic fields; operates & maintains heavy equipment.



  • Adheres to all OSHA &/or Ohio University required safety guidelines;

  • Performs skilled & semi-skilled grounds maintenance functions (e.g., plants, fertilizes, prunes & applies insecticides to lawns, shrubs & trees, applies top soil, grades surfaces & lays sod, mows & drags; lays out, limes & plants athletic fields);

  • Performs routine grounds maintenance & general labor (e.g., removes snow & applies salt to ice: mows, weeds & cleans lawns & flower beds; maintains parking lots & streets; delivers supplies); picks up litter;

  • Cleans & repairs tools; services & repairs equipment including tractors, mowers and backhoes; installs attachments on equipment; operates heavy equipment (i.e., large tractors and attached equipment as assigned);

  • Performs other related duties as required.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of grounds maintenance;

  • Skill in operating various types of grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., tractors, mowers, sprayers, sod cutters, etc.);

  • Operating servicing grounds maintenance equipment;

  • Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral or picture form;

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in familiar context;

  • Ability to read & write common vocabulary in sentence structure;

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, calculate fractions, decimals & percentages;

  • Ability to apply principles and solve practical problems;

  • Willingness to foster a welcoming and respectful workforce and community

  • Knowledge of all applicable OSHA and/or Ohio University safety guidelines and procedures;

  • Lift up to 50 lbs.;

  • 24 mos. training and/or experience in grounds maintenance & large tractor operation, or equivalent;

  • Pesticide applicator’s license required if applying pesticides regulated by law;

  • Valid driver’s license;

  • Successful completion of a test may be required;

  • Works outside in all weather conditions;

  • May work with potentially dangerous equipment & chemicals.

  • Established pattern of good work habits and performance with good interpersonal skills.
