Reference, Instruction, and AI Librarian
Muskingum University invites applications for the position of Reference, Instruction, & AI Librarian. This position will help bridge the gap between traditional library services and emerging AI-driven technologies to help shape the future of academic librarianship at the University.
The successful candidate will provide information literacy instruction to students and assist faculty with integrating library resources and instructional technologies into their courses. The position will assist library users with research and information needs, assist with the general day-to-day operations of the Roberta A. Smith University Library, lead the library’s integration of AI into library services, instruction, and support, and contribute to campus AI initiatives.
This is an administrative position that may include the additional faculty status of Assistant Professor.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Participate in providing reference and research assistance services across disciplines, including in-person, mediated chat, email, virtual, and phone reference
- Collect statistics related to instruction, reference, or other areas as assigned.
- Provide course-integrated information literacy instruction, including AI literacy instruction, services in support of all undergraduate disciplines, graduate programs, and adult education programs as requested by faculty or assigned by the Library Director.
- Promote library services, particularly information literacy, by cultivating relationships with faculty and students.
- Teaching responsibilities that could include a 3-credit information literacy and research course.
- Instruct students and faculty on the ethical and effective use of AI in academic research.
- Stay current with trends in AI and digital librarianship.
- Participate in campus AI initiatives.
- Assist with the development of LibGuides, staff training programs, and the Library’s website.
- Participate with library staff in general collection development, maintenance, and management.
- Assist with the daily operation of the Roberta A. Smith University Library.
- Attend department, division, and faculty meetings and participate in campus committees as assigned.
- Participate in OPAL and OhioLINK committees and task forces as invited or assigned by the Library Director.
- Remain current with library trends and issues by attending OPAL, OhioLINK, and other professional development opportunities as assigned or approved by the Library Director. Attendance may be virtual or in person.
- Some travel to library consortia meetings and professional conferences may be required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- An MLS, MALS, or MILS from an ALA-accredited library information studies program or an equivalent degree. Coursework in teaching methods, instructional theory, or instructional design preferred.
- Demonstrated commitment to student-centered service.
- Demonstrated commitment to information literacy.
- Familiarity with AI tools, concepts, applications, and ethical considerations.
- Ability to deliver reference assistance and instruction.
- Ability to work in a service-oriented, collaborative, collegial, team-based environment, with the ability to work independently at times.
- Ability to embrace a fast-paced environment.
PREFERED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of and experience with Alma/Primo
- Experience with Interlibrary Loan via WorldShare
