Data Protection Engineer
Job Description
The Data Protection Engineer will serve as a subject matter expert responsible for building, maturing, and operating enterprise cybersecurity programs. This role partners closely with IT, Legal, Compliance, and business stakeholders to design scalable security capabilities while also retaining hands-on operational responsibility. The position emphasizes program ownership, governance, and long-term capability development, with direct involvement in day-to-day execution where required.
Responsibilities:
Identify and assess:
Own enterprise data protection risk assessments, classification standards, and control effectiveness evaluations.
Securely build & protect:
Design and implement enterprise data protection controls including encryption, key management, DLP, and data governance platforms across cloud and on-prem environments.
Monitor, hunt, detect:
Monitor for data misuse, exfiltration, and policy violations; integrate detection capabilities with SOC workflows.
Respond, recover, sustain:
Lead response activities related to data exposure incidents, ensuring containment, remediation, and lessons learned.
Govern, manage, comply, & manage risk:
Develop and maintain data protection policies aligned with regulatory requirements (FERPA, CCPA, Canadian Privacy Laws) and enterprise risk objectives.

Skills and Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Security, or equivalent experience.
5+ years of cybersecurity experience with emphasis on data protection and cloud security.Strong understanding of AWS security services and cloud-native data protection controls.
Proficiency with Python or scripting for automation and reporting.
Familiarity with NIST CSF, ISO 27001, and regulatory compliance frameworks.
Strong understanding of cloud-native data protection controls, particularly within AWS.
Experience responding to data exposure incidents and coordinating remediation. Industry certifications such as CISSP, CCSP, CISM, or equivalent preferred.
