Surveyor
This employee leads and participate in the work of a survey crew responsible for obtaining field measurements in support of engineering designs and providing construction layouts for various improvement projects, geodetic, topographical, underground, preliminary, construction and property surveys in accordance with state laws; to conduct survey research as necessary in accordance with City and State property law and survey principles and practices.

State surveying laws and their proper interpretation and implementation. Minimum standards for property surveys. Proper use and maintenance of survey equipment. Mathematics: algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics. Safety policies and procedures; Employee Safety Instruction Manual. Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. Research techniques and resources for property and survey records. Drafting techniques. Ability To Participate in the work of a survey crew in performance of a wide variety of tasks. Plan and organize work tasks. Implement safety precautions, policies and procedures. Keep detailed and accurate records. Perform complex mathematical computations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Write accurate legal descriptions of property. Perform related research tasks; read and interpret plans, plats and records. Gather and record "as built" project measurements. Perform drafting and drawing tasks; make survey plats, survey drawings, etc. Perform strenuous physical labor. Operate a computer in performance of job duties. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City and other government officials, community groups and the public. Operate assigned vehicle in performance of job duties. Examples of Work Performed (Illustrative only. Lead the field operations of the assigned survey crew after receiving instruction from the Supervising Surveyor or appropriate engineering personnel; apply knowledge of state surveying laws; assume responsibility for the safety of the survey crew; implement safety precautions and procedures.Train crew members in correct and safe use of equipment.Document field work as appropriate; check all mathematical calculations for accuracy; maintain proper records of all survey data, filing as appropriate.Research legal records as needed: deeds, survey plats, auditor information, ownership information, etc.Prepare "as built" measurements as requested by project or design engineer; perform drafting and drawing tasks as appropriate.Supervise or participate in the writing of deeds, street vacation ordinances, property descriptions, etc., as appropriate.Serves as an expert witness in court actions involving City property disputes, as required.Assist those contacted in the course of duty in an effective, efficient and professional manner.Perform related duties as assigned. Probationary Period Twelve Months Supervision ExercisedExercises technical and functional supervision over lower-level personnel. Must be a Professional Surveyor Licensed from the State of Ohio Board of Engineers and Surveyors or possess a Bachelor’s degree in Surveying from an Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) college or university. Other Requirements Must have a Valid Driver’s License. Military Education & Experience Evaluation Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case-by-case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations.
