Lineman
Position Overview
The Electric Lineman performs skilled and safety-sensitive work in the construction, operation, maintenance, and repair of the Village’s electric distribution system. This position routinely works with high-voltage electrical equipment and infrastructure, including overhead and underground distribution lines, transformers, and associated appurtenances. Working under the direction of the Electric Superintendent, the Electric Lineman operates specialized vehicles and heavy equipment, completes work orders, responds to outages and emergencies, and supports day-to-day electric utility operations. This position is subject to mandatory on-call duty and emergency response at all hours.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in the electric line trade, or completion of an accredited lineman training program with documented experience.
- Experience performing high-voltage electrical work on distribution systems.
- Ability to climb utility poles and structures and successfully complete pole-top safety and rescue procedures.
- Ability to operate line trucks and heavy equipment, including bucket trucks, digger derricks, backhoes, track hoes, and skid steers.
- Ability to pass required pre-employment drug screening and background checks.
- Availability for mandatory on-call rotation, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Desired Qualifications
- Journeyman Lineman certification or current enrollment in a Journeyman Lineman program.
- Experience working in a municipal electric utility environment.
Desired Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of: Electric distribution systems; electrical principles; overhead and underground line construction and maintenance; high-voltage safety practices; OSHA and utility safety standards; traffic control and work zone safety; tools, equipment, and materials used in electric utility operations; Village policies and procedures.
Skills in: Operating aerial bucket trucks, digger derrick trucks, trenchers, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks, and related equipment; troubleshooting electrical system issues; reading and interpreting work orders, maps, and specifications; safely using power tools and utility equipment; completing documentation and work records.
Ability to: Safely perform high-voltage electrical work; work independently and as part of a crew; exercise sound judgment in hazardous and emergency situations; communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the public; perform physically demanding work for extended periods in adverse conditions; climb structures ranging from 40 to 100 feet; lift and move up to 100 pounds; maintain professionalism and positive public relations.
Key Responsibilities
- Construct, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electric distribution lines, transformers, and related equipment.
- Locate, troubleshoot, and restore electric service during outages and emergencies.
- Perform high-voltage electrical work in compliance with safety standards and regulations.
- Operate bucket trucks, digger derricks, and other heavy equipment.
- Connect and disconnect electric services for customers.
- Install, maintain, and repair streetlights, parking lot lights, and exterior lighting at Village facilities.
- Order materials, stock department vehicles, and maintain tools and equipment.
- Prepare, document, and complete work orders accurately and timely.
- Assist with storm response, emergency restoration, and system upgrades.
- Assist with installation and removal of banners, holiday decorations, and other Village fixtures as assigned.
- Support other Village departments as needed during emergencies or special projects.
- Attend required safety meetings, trainings, and certifications.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Electric Superintendent.
Physical and Working Conditions
- Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, wind, and storms.
- Position involves exposure to high-voltage electrical hazards, heavy machinery, hazardous materials, and elevated work platforms.
- Requires climbing poles and structures, working at heights, lifting heavy materials, and performing strenuous physical labor.
- Exposure to noise, traffic, confined spaces, and emergency conditions.
- Subject to mandatory on-call duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
